overheat!!!

Ok last night I was driving home after picking up a band member to jam out with.We were driving along in the rex....All of the sudden my heat went cold and the engine temp shot right up to H...The funny thing was the low coolant buzzer never went off???Anyway long story short,The heater core send hose off the engine burst!!!I lost all the coolant!! I have no Idea how long it ran without coolant? My question is this...How can I assess what damage was caused by the no coolant problem? I was told that a rotary is **** after it has been overheated...I plan on replacing the heater hose and coolant and trying to start the **** again. But I fear that one of two things is going to happen.#1The engine will run like **** and leak coolant into a rotor housing....#2The engine will not run at all......I have a spare engine I could put in..But it's winter and I have no indoor shop..Also the donor car is buried under a foot of snow!! Sounds to me like I'm in a world of **** without a shovel.....

I'm not sure exactly how you would assess the damage without tearing it down. Your best bet would be simply to replace the hoses, and see what happens.

Also, the sensor works by contacting ground, it was some how grounded, without the fuild that'd be why the buzzer never went off....or your buzzer may be dead.

well when i was having overheating problems with my car it overheated about 5 times in one week. to the point where the coolent was bubbling. and I alos ran the car for 3 days without the e-fan (i forgot to hook it up. duh) but i dont know if the engine overheated those 3 days.

But my engine is still good. I would replace the hose fill her up and see how she runs. yours should run good. You would only have a problem is the coolent seals in the engine were originally on their way out.

I really think its a total myth when people say once the rotary over heats its no good. It all depends on how well its been taken car of - IE. flushing the coolent system every year or 2.

Remember that the engine is a huge chunk of metal and can sink a LOT of heat as well. Warping is the problem though... well not so much that as:
2 different metals. 2 different expansion rates. Bust seals bend metal.

okay there we go!

i had a similar problem about a year ago which caused the temp needle to shoot right up, it ran hot for about 5-10 mins before i noticed. my buzzer didn't come on either but there was steam/smoke everywhere, thought my motor was toast. i eventually got the car home, fixed the problems, filled the coolant and its running nearly perfect a year on. the only thing you can do is give it go and see what happens. good luck

Your worst fear is the coolant seals. If they survived, chances are, your car will live (although you probably just shaved a few thousand miles of its cumulative lifespan).

Here is the check, GOOD LUCK:

I think my engine has been overheated. How can I check to see if the coolant seals are good?
Fill coolant system ALL THE WAY UP (engine cold). Make sure that the fluid level is as high as you can get it. Leave the filler cap off. Remove the EGI fuse. Crank the motor (it should not start). If you get a LARGE amount of coolant coming out of the coolant fill, its safe to assume your coolant seals are blown. Also, a good indication is a fuel/exhaust smell in the coolant.
