1988 RX-7

hey my 1st post!! so i think i'm falling in love with these cars. what would you guys say is the best year for the convertable? and why is this one so expensive? i got the dough but i'm offended when people try to rip me off. how much could i talk him down to when i go take a look at it tomorrow? i've dnoe a lot of reading in the forum so i think i know what to ask. any tips would be great.

this is going to be my second car and i wanted it to be a fun one cuz my last one, well... i didn't like it much.

88 vert with good interrior around 80k miles and doesn't need brake callipers (2-300 a piece), no apparent problems + NO RIPS IN THE ROOF (1000$)= around 3500, 5000 at absoulte most. lowest with out some secret rpoblem is 2500. less than that somethings got to be wrong. 89-92 vert is a few thousand more. i paid 7200 for my 90 vert

http://www.geocities.com/b_timberlake/90RX7.html

but it had 64000 miles and was garaged 6 yrs before i made it look like this

Can check the Kelly Blue book and use that as a bargaining point. Thats what I did for my 88 vert-they were asking $5000 told them I would give book of $4400 last year. But value is a matter of opinion-condition and market is whats most important.

I bought my 88 'vert a year and half ago for $2500 with a brand new top... so anything over $3500 would seem excessive for a 88.

Private party 88 'verts with less than 100K miles are averaging (across the USA) around $3300 right now (is 'vert season) while dealer trade in is averaging around $2500 and dealer retail is averaging $4700.

Bought mine from a dealer, some guy traded it in for a Vette. That's how those dealers make money! Did not mine paying what I did due to condition. Its a completely stock unmolested car. Pretty hard to find any RX-7's in my area in nice shape especially verts.

rare? i've looked everywhere and found only that one decent/good one. it's a pitty more people don't take care of their cars (in my opinion a good car is like a work of art). i hope when i go see him i can talk him down. i couldn't get a hold of him today so maybe tomorrow . could you guys explain what makes the 88 the best year?

are there any other colors besides white and red? i would take a black one if they exist in convertable form or a red one if it had good paint. my plan is 16 or 17 inch rims, s5 tail-light conversion, and play with the engine a bit... sound good? hehe i can't wait.

I agree- 88's are superior! (maybe cause I own one.)

Got mine for 2500 with 115000mi- but EVERYTHING worked. Even the clock and windshield wipers- which I hear are prone to failure. I have had mine about 7 months, and LOVE it. Mine is black- and they come in silver and blue as well, I believe. S5 tails were the first thing I did, and they look great on my s4.

As for why- well, it was the first year they were made.
Good enough reason for me! Also- no funky air bags, no ABS to deal with.

wow this thread was 2 and half years old... and yes 88's are best, mech omp, no abs, no airbags, lighter, i can go on and on, i would never buy a s5 after having to work on my ex girlfriends, maybe it was cause hers was an auto and they are a paint to work on imo, only thing about s5's i like is the front lip and the tail lights
