do you have another belt on the motor to the water pump? i dont remember but i think one belt goes on the main pulley to the water pump to the alt, and another one goes from the main to the water pump to the air pump.. you should be ok, but the only way to find out is put another belt on it and go for a drive!

I am thinking that the water pump is on a separate belt than the alt. Am I right?

same belt

one belt is alternator and water pump, other belt is air pump and water pump. That's why people get dual alternator pulleys when they remove their air pump.

There are two belts to the water pump one in which is the alt belt and the other is the air pump. If you air pump belt is still hooked up then your water pump was working. Don't worry about the gauge though, even if it was connected chances are it still would have read mid range until it is just too late. You should be ok though. I've broken 3 alt belts in one month before. I ended up having to buy another alternator because my old one was seizing up. Put on new belt and drive for a couple of miles and check the temp and belts. I now change my belts each year and travel with 1 gallon of water just because of this.
