Outside Door Handle Broken
My handle broke and i need to replace it on my driver's side door. Is all I need is the outside handle from Mazdatrix? There is nothing internal that needs to be replaced? Also, I have my car painted to 95 RX7 red. I believe the 86 red was sunrise red.... would true red closely match the 95 red?
thanks,
Matt

Re: Outside Door Handle Broken
My driverside door handle was broken aswell. No internal part can be replaced-- atleast not where they usualy break at. A piece of cast that has leverage too pull open the door broke. I JB Welded mine 3 times before I got a new one, which is now primer grey on a sunrise red car. But at least I can get in my car from the driverside. I paid $15 including shipping from someone on the parts for sale board.

Its actually not a hard fix at all. You have to replace the entire exterioir door assembly. It DOES require to pay careful attention to where the window is. You probably have to roll the window up and down a few times to find the inner bolt. The window is physicaly notched by the factory where the bolt is, so it makes it accessible without removing the window. I've done it twice, and im convinced I could have the door handle removed and replaced in less than 10 minutes (less time to remove the door trim, add an extra 5 both ways). The first time took a bit, mainly finding the two bolts that hold the handle to the door. Pay careful attention to the rubber seal aswell, make sure when reinstalling, that it doesn't get folded.

Mind you, the most challenging part is replacing the lock mech from your original to your replacement. Security system models of the car have a few extra wires that are held with very small philip screws. I broke the heads off of all three screws that hold the wires in place. It works fine though, I just used a bit of epoxy instead of the screws.

I got creative and noticed how mine broke. Where the copperish colored rotating bit that pushes on the rod that actually goes to open the door, where it rotates by the handle on a bolt/nut I guess has rusted off....so since there was nothing for the mechanism to rotate on, it'd slip off and wala...inside would work (different rods!) and the outside wouldn't.
I saw two possible solutions for my problem.
1. Zip tie around the point of rotation.
2. Remove handle, drill out old bolt, replace.
Since 1 was vastly easier, I tried that. It's been working for a month now!

Hit the junk yard, yank a good looking handle,(5 bucks) then go to a shop and have them paint it.(15-25 bucks) Since it so small have them paint it when they paint something ( a car) the same color it should be cheaper. Well mine was black so it wasnt so tough to match the color. While your there get some extra handles cause they will break again. You will need to remove 2 10mm bolts and 2 clips holding on the handle. Then you can just unclip the electronics. Be more carful on your car though.

That also makes the handles interior stuff rust out and break!

It's acctually not that hard to fix at all... here it is step by step
Reason for breakage? Weak metal, over time the metal just gets brittle and snaps..
1.Roll window all the way up.
2. using a flat head screw driver carefully remove outside window molding (pry up, than pull off window molding)
3. remove inside doorpanal there is an assortment of screws that hold this on. You will also need to remove the plastic part around the inside door handle to remove a rather large bolt that connects to your "oh **** bar"
4. once doorpanal is remove and power window switches have been unplugged (if applicable) you will be able to see ONE of the bolts that holds your door handle in place. I believe it's either a 10 or 12 MM.. remove that bolt useing an extension bar.
5. Now you are going to have to roll the window back down. If you have power windows plug the window regulator back in, turn your key to ON, and roll the window back down... all the way
6. you will be able to access the 2nd bolt that holds your door handle to your door.
7. Once the door handle assembly is loose there are 2 rods that connect to it. One is for the door locks the other is for the inside handle operation. The rods arnt brain science, just look at them and you'll see how they disconnect.
8. Remove door handle. Inspect area that is broken. I had a passenger handle break, and with some careful welding managed to fix it...
There usually is only one place that it breaks..
Hope this helps

i had the same problem.....we had to pull the window actually up and off track just a tad...sounds bad, but its not...and it makes working in that cramped space a little easier...just get one of your friends to hold the glass while its off track, and that should allow you plenty of working room....victoria british has the parts for sell (as far as the rods and stuff go.....i lucked out and one of the friendly members of this board sent me the bar i needed for free......
