Our hobby is in DANGER!!!!..

SUMMIT RACING emailed me this!!!.Message-Id: <20020204193252.81D5B31BB90@mail2.summitracing.com >
Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 14:32:52 -0500 (EST)

Dear Summit Racing Customer,

Your hobby is in danger! Proposed U.S. government legislation, U.S.
Senate Bill S.1766, would allocate federal funds for state scrappage programs
for vehicles more than 15 years old. In the process, it could threaten the
very existence of our hobby by:

*Destroying 1960s and 70s era musclecars

*Scrapping 1980s performance vehicles like Mustangs, Camaros, and Corvettes

*Eliminating many non-performance vehicles which provide an invaluable parts
source

Take a stand for your rights--and your hobby--by letting your U.S. Senator
know how this bill will directly affect you. Log onto our website at
http://www.SummitRacing.com for a copy of our Legislator Letter, which you
can print, sign, and mail to your Senator. Then, go to
http://www.enjoythedrive.com/san for a complete list of legislator names and
addresses, plus additional information on U.S. Senate Bill S.1766.

Act now--your hobby may depend on it!

ARE 1st gen and 2 gens in DANGER????

You know, as much as America may be one of the best places to live... i have to say.. this is really bordering on a socialist government here.

Doesnt matter if WE elected those big wigs in congress, they dont know what its like to work on, restore, and drive a classic car. So yea, its easy for them to pass **** liek this seeing as how since they have millions and make 100k+ a year they can just drive a ferarri.

Congress makes me sick

Talking

"...the land of the freeeee, and the home of the brave......"

Yeah right....you have things like curfew, cops that can stop and strip you over nothing, burglars that can go to trial -and win - because there was a soap on the floor in the house that they were stealing from and they slipped and hurt themselves, and many-many-many other wonderful things......

....and now this ? Man, you should see what a real "free country" looks like, then you wont say such pompous things....

hey Ace, i don`t know how much freedom u have in Greece, but after spending one year in USA and Canada and living in CZ most of life, i would say that there is no freedom in either one country

Every democtratic country calling itself free country would have something i would dislike. There are some things i like about USA or Canada, but again there are some which are better in Czech legal system than in theirs.....And other side......its not like they are better and we are worst.....i wish it would be that simple but it isn`t.

About situation in CZ, we can`t IMPORT car older than 5 years. Ok, i got in my 87 TII but i drove it in on US tags and then had to change VIN number and use plates from wrecked TII which was already registered in CZ.

They don`t go over us and burn old cars, they just don`t let us bring anything from germany or other states and get it registered, even if its perfectly running.

That makes for me impossible to get any FD because there are only like 2 registered in CZ and i would not find any VIN and title for it if i`ll want to buy some in germany, austria or so....
I would have to get less than 5 years old, so i would have to get some from japan guess ;o))))

That has about as much of a chance of passing as a new alcohol prohibition. I wouldn't get too worried.

The "five-year-rule" applies to Greece as well. Has to do with reducing the age of the total "car pool" in the country...and it is a bummer, because if I want to import something from, say, Germany, it would have to be no more than 5 years old Not so many cheap sports cars in my price range in the last 5 years (even Porsches are a bit expensive in this period).

There are of course ways of doing this (like you have), but it must be airtight (because "Cars" is a HUGGEEEEEEEE income for the Greek goverment, they are pretty serious about their taxes )

And I agree about "not the worst, not the best" suggestion you made, but I cannt imagine living in a country where the "Big Brother" is always looking over my shoulder....or decides for me, before me, and without asking me

Hey Ace! Before you start criticizing the US, just keep in mind who fought and died to save your asses from the ***** and gave you the "FREEDOM" to buy your low-emissions German cars. Just my two cents worth.

Unhappy

hehehe, its always funny to see people criticizing Greece about ideas and notions such as "freedom", "liberty", "honour" etc....

These have been around over here even before your ancestors (natives) even migrated to your continent and started hunting wild buffalos...

As for WWII, allow me to believe that the US did next to nothing (other than to drop the "Boy"). Germans (and Italians) were fought back by Greek soldiers, not by your "help"....

As you can see, I have a japanese car. You also have japanese cars. Does that mean that the japanese are "forgiven", or that they have "forgiven" you for the two A-bombs ? Dont make me laugh....

And about the "17th November"....Yeah, I know that this is a thorn in Greece's side, BUT the general belief over here is that this is an american construct used to manipulate our goverment (as is the case for hundreds of countries all over the world). There is no point in denying it, this is almost a proven fact....

If thats so how come the Greece government won't even investigate it? How come the US has trained Greece officers for specific tasks only to go back to the Greece to be traffic cops? How come Greece politicians won't speak about it hardly or answer many peoples questions? It definitely looks like a lack of effort to put the 17 November to a stop. Not saying anything about you or your country at all, just speaking about this one incident and am personally curious.

Let's see...The United States is attacked by another country officially drawing us into the war. We lose how many soldiers(?) in the process of kicking Japan's *** pushing them back to their mainland and they refuse to surrender. Military estimates push possible US losses up to 1 million ADDITIONAL soldiers to take the Japanese mainland and end the war. We then warn them ahead of time to surrender or we will use the bomb. They refuse so we drop one. THEY STILL DO NOT SURRENDER. We warn them again and they STILL DO NOT SURRENDER. So we drop another. Finally they surrender.

I could not give a rat's *** if we are forgiven. They started it. We finished it.

The fun part is, the tax payers are paying for this. They will give a person a rebate for a certain dollar ammount if you turn your car in. I don't know about anyone else, but the fact that I will pay for someone else to turn in a perfectly running car, granted it is old, but still running to some joe blow so he can have a better car for no reason at all is enough to want me to stop the bill from passing.

I really am getting sick of this crap.. here at school we elected a new Fraternity President last year, and he's a freaking democrat (you can tell) because he keeps trying to regulate EVERY DAMN THING IN THE HOUSE.. it's sick.. freaking let people do what they want to do, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else in the process.

Did you guys read the bill????

U.S. Senate Bill S.1766 (Section 803) ???

It doesn't talk anything about mandatory scraping of cars... Summit is reading too much into this or is too un-informed.

It talks about the federal government giving money to the states if the state starts a voluntary scrapage program for vehicles listed.

Doesn't say anything about mandatory crushing your car no matter how old. Although frankly I personally think that some of the cars that people drive that are missing all the smog equipment should be included.

IMO makes perfect sense. The Feds give money to the states for highways, why not to destroy old smog creating clunkers so they can be replaced with smog creating SUVs.

You forgot to add that Roosevelt knew about Japan's plans to invade Pearl Harbor for 3 days and sat back and let people die so we could get in the war.

Political arguments belong in the Lounge, not here.

There is no way this law would ever pass, even if this "proposal" is real. Chill out.

I agree with you. Maybe we should have attacked them first and still dropped the bombs. Like Roosevelt knowing is any excuse for them attacking us.

If anybody wants to continue this, post in the lounge. I'll join in there.

Its still rediculous.

The way i see it, the aim of this bill is to get older, trashed out cars like the ones most people in the lowest income bracket drive.

er, excuse me, it gives them "incentive" to.
