Opinions on Winter Tires
Whats the best, what do you use and why?
Looks like I might be using the FC this winter
I need new tires soon and I plan on upgrading my nasty rims with some nice low profile z rated tires in the spring, but I need some good tires for the winter.
What will keep my 7 from going into a tree?

The best true studless winter tire is the Blizzak. Their ability to grip the slippery stuff is amazing. The only problem with them is they wear out very quickly. Yokohama makes a good one. Not as effective as the Blizzak, but you'll get 2 or 3 seasons out of them.

Hakapellita
When I bought my car a couple of months ago it had Blizzaks on it. I think I'm going to put my studded Hakapellita 1's on it for the winter though. We get a lot of snow here in Vermont, so it's a better tire than the Blizzak for this area. Blizzaks are good on the ice. If you can say any tire is "good" on ice.
You really have to go on what the winter delivers. Since you're in Binghamton, NY you probably get a good amount of snow, but how many days are the roads not clear? Here there are lots of those days so I go with the Hakapellita.

Go to www.tirerack.com they allow you to designate what kind of tire you are looking for (all season, ultra performance, all season high performance, etc.) Then they offer a rating system for the tires they carry which includes ratings on tread wear, wet and dry handling, snow handling, noise, etc. Its worth a look.

I used the Michelin Artic Alpins last winter. I think Michelin makes some of the best tires, and their winter ones are no different, I found them great on snow and ice. I have also heard good things about the Blizzaks
