Ok, so I saw this car the other day where a guy removed his tail lights, and fiberglassed the empty space up, and put some Tractor trailer LED taillights in their place. I Thought it looked pretty cool, and now I saw some modified 3rd gen lights in the group buy the had them built into the light. Granted they were inside the housing, and these would be flush with the face of the housing, but pretty much the same principle. Of course I would try it out on a spare set of series 5 tails, but I thought id ask here if anyone thought they were tacky, cause I dont want to just do it and then look like an asshat.

Get plug in replacements. If their light output is the same and they use less energy, i say go for it. Just don't have little smiley faces shinning throught

 

Ive never seen plug in replacements, as in picture form compared to stockers.

 

i think itd be kinda cool to have just a ring of light glow through instead of a solid dot, two rings on each side, thatd be kinda cool, i dunno. . . .

just find the bulb number and search ebay I have seen them in the stores but never on our cars.

 

Ive seen those all over ebay, but never seen them installed in a car so im not sure how they would look, my main goal is to have the taillights look like many smaller lights, like the FD picture, and similar to what new Cadillac taillights look like.

 

all of my external lights, except the headlights and plate marker lights are LEDs, and I love the voltage savings.. Parking lights only drop my running voltage about one tenth of a volt.

Have any photo's of you car at night. Id be intreasted in replacing the blubs with led's if they are light enough

In the near future all cars will come with LED lighting.

They come on faster.

Gainesville raceway converted the tree to LED's over a year ago.

 

I think its NHRA mandate... The led **** looks good.

 

I did all my bulbs, too. They are a little brighter, and they last 100,000 hours. Thats 11.4 years of CONTINUOUS use, 68 years at 4 hours a day. Theres no reason why any carmaker shouldn't use them exclusively now.

 

PS are the APC LED replacements any good? I usually see them at my local auto parts store and wanted to give them a whirl in my daily driver to find out if they are brighter.

 

I'm not sure if the CPU will fuss at the low current & give a bulb failure warning.
Other than that, it's a slam dunk.

in my old celica, the current given for the parking lights, made the LEDs lite up, and when i press on the brake, it didn't do anything... i don't know if it is the same with the RX, but if someone did it on the FC, please post pictures of no lights, parking, braking, and turn signal ^_^

 

there was a DIY article in an option mag that i had from a while ago. It involved cutting out the stock bulb housings and replacing them with led housings from some japanese car. they looked pretty good. ill try to find it. it was all done for under 200 bux

 

my foggy memory recalls a post about someone who removed the smoked lense from their taillight...but ive been known to be wrong on more than one occasion!

 

The CPU give me the brake light warning, and the flashers are a bit faster. This could be cured with a resistor, but that just defeats the purpose of the LED conversion..

^ it doesn't completely defeat the purpose, the bulbs still last a whole lot longer.

 

I know it's possible to get heavy duty flashers that don't crap out when switching trailer lights as well - with a stock flasher module, the excess load from trailer lights will cause them to flicker more than flash. I'm wondering if there's a way to use a similar module to handle the extremely light loads of the LEDs - you'd want something that was totally internally controlled and had no requirements about current draw.

That is very true.. But for my purpose, it was all about saving voltage, which unloads the alternator, which saves me gas, which saves me $$.

The lasting part of it is merely a bonus for me!
