Exclamation Only 1 side of the rear hatch opens w/ key

My 1987 RX7 base is having an issue with the rear hatch. The lever has never worked since I got it. Doesnt even feel attached to anything, so thats fine. I never use it. However, I've always just turned the key(in the rear), and both sides of the hatch release, letting it up. It actually pops up too, has good struts(when it was working). The passengers side releases fine but drivers side stays locked. I recently put the spare tire back in at the same time this happened. Before I climb back there, I just wanted to see if anyone experienced this. I found multiple other threads but not my exact issue. I thought I saw something unplugged, could it really be electrical if I am popping it with the key? Otherwise maybe I messed something up putting in the spare. Appreciate any help. thanks

so there are two things, the key turns the lock, which move metal rods to open the latches. its not uncommon for one side to need more turning than the other, but you may need to tweak one of the rods.

the pull up thing on the inside is a cable, and if seen them pop off, the fix was just to put it back. 10 minute problem...
