ok some clear up on 5th 6th ports?

Ok, Somebody explain to me the use of the 5th and 6th ports on my car...and what causes them to open on what model car. (exhaust, air pump, etc) I have a 90' gtu about 2 weeks ago and have just been learning about my car readin' on the forum and 5th and 6th ports get mentioned alot....so i wanted some info on how to check to see if mine were working properly...including where to find them on the car. Heh.
Also i've heard of forcing them to stay open? Is this a good or bad thing to do...any more info or link to similar post that i couldn't find would be nice...thx.

Ok the 5th and 6th ports work like this. The intake manifold has 6 ports total, but only 4 are used under 4000rpm to help build power at the lower rpms. But after 4000rpm the 5th and 6th ports open allowing more air to be sucked into the engine making more power in the top end. Think of it as Mazdas 80s form of VTEC.

They are located on the passenger side of the intake manifold, behind the airpump. You should see the Air Control Valve right on the side of the IM and two actuators attached to 2 rods that go into the manifold. Those are your 5th/6th ports. Since your car is an S5(89-91) they are opened by the airpump.

If they are not working your car will run very slow and have little power in the top end.

Wiring them open is not a good idea. You will loose low end power and gain nothing but what you could gain by simply cleaning them and making sure they open properly.

If you're looking in the FSM (which is a very good idea) you'll need to look for them by their correct name.

The system is called 6-Port Induction (6PI) by Mazda and the ports themselves are the auxillary ports, not 5th/6th ports or any of the other silly names they get called here.

I have never refered to mine as 5th/6th Ports. Always Auxilliary Ports. I'm particular that way.
