Ok, so what do 5 beeps everytime i get on the highway mean?

So today i take the RX7 out for a trip to the store. I get on the highway and all is well, enjoying my newly working power steering.

Then all of the sudden my car starts beeping at me, 5 beeps then repeat.

So i check all the lights and gauges, all seems normal. After i get off at a stop sign i turn the car off and restart it and the beeping stops.

I do some more stuff and then get back ont he highway to go home. Once again it starts beeping at me, 5 beeps repeat.

This time when i get off the highway i just drive normal and after a min the beeping stops.

What could this be? Only things that have changed since i drove it last are that it has sat for a week or so and i replaced the steering rack. It is also colder now then last tiem i drove it if that makes any differnce. And i noticed after i got home that my brake fluid is a tad low. otherwise everything is exactly the same as the last time i drove it. Only other thing to consider is somethign isfishy with my wiring, my fuel light is on almost all the time and come on anytime my e-brake is pulled. no idea if that might tell you something?

Any ideas what this could be? It is not the buzzer beeping, it is a beep like the one that happens when the door is open with the key in.

Well that makes sense as this is the first time i have driven it since i got the power steering working. Now the question is what exactly is wrong and how do i fix it?

I have a parts car that should have anything i need, just need to know what i need to swap.

I do know that it didn't seem that the power steering was cutting out at over 45mph like it should have. Speed sensor maybe?

713 posts and Texas_Ace doesn't know to look at the sticky threads like the FAQ for FC that this problem is covered in???

If you had looked at the FAQ for FC sticky thread you would have found:

Probably the power steering computer telling you there is a problem with the system. The number of beeps before pausing will indicate the problem.
1-beep, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of speed sensor signal:
In case broken wires or short circuits occur to sensors or harnesses, the buzzer sounds 60-seconds after the engine speed signal of 2200 rpm continues for 18-seconds.
2-beeps, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of engine speed signal:
The buzzer sounds twice and repeats when the vehicle speed signal is missing input and/or no engine speed signal is found (short circuit, broken wire, etc.)
3-beeps, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of stepping motor signal:
The buzzer sounds when there are broken wires or short circuits in coils or harnesses.
4-beeps, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of the power steering microcomputer:
The buzzer sounds 4 and repeats when there are circuit troubles other than with the micro computer.
5-beeps, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of steering sensor signal: Steering sensor is mis-aligned or failed or steering wheel has been improperly installed.
You have 5 beeps??? You have the steering wheel on wrong.

Yes i know about the FAQ, i have read it many times. I just never remembered anything like this in there.

So what does wrong mean? it is a little ****-eyed but i think that messing with the ball joins i can fix that. I don't really care to take it off the rack again, getting it on there was a NIGHTMARE.

Or does it mean that the wheel is spun around? How would you know how to line it up if it spun all the way around (which i know it did when installing the rack)?

Ok, now that i know what the problem is i was able to find some links that were actually useful.

Most of them had to do with installing a new stering wheel though. in the case of a new wheel they were told to take the wheel off and line up some tabs, no idea what those are but i am sure i could figure it out.

My question is this, i am planning on having my car alinged today (it is WAY off and not fun to drive as it is). Can this problem be fixed by removing the wheel and lineing it up in there? I REALLY don't want to mess with the rack again!

Thanks

You don't have to mess with the rack to do this. You need to take the steering wheel off the hub. Once you take it off, you will see the tabs you mentioned. Just line them up with the alignment arrows, and put the wheel back on.
Also, do you mean its way off as in the wheel is turned a lot to go straight, or that you let go and the car veers way off to one side?
