OK to rest engine on the flywheel?

I want to remove the oil pan on my pulled engine and I do not yet have an engine stand attachment. I am just wondering if it is okay to rest the engine on the flywheel. Will the weight of the engine put too much pressure on internal bearings? Or would it be better to lye it on its side with some wood blocks?

Uh, don't do that.
You're loading the internal bearing unnecessarily.
Use a block of wood underneath.

what i did was take the front cover off and put four or five pieces of 2x4 (about 4-5 inches long) aorund the the edges of the plate. the motor will be vertical and everything should be pretty accessible. hope this helps.

I'd HIGHLY suggest renting an engine stand or buy one (they're cheap) if you're dis-assembing a motor. When you're putting it back together, it makes it a LOT easier since you can rotate the block . You might have a hard time installing the apex seal springs if the rear end is not angled up. Then again, people have been creative.

I rebuilt my engine without a stand. Sort of wish I had a stand though. I Always had the engine sitting on blocks of wood though. It only got tricky after we put the oil pan on. Had to sort of put the wood around the edge of it if I remember correctly. I think I might invest in a stand though If I rebuild the engine again. They're less than $50 I believe.

yeah, pressure like that on the flywheel...well, it'll cause you to replace it.

Somebody needs to talk to Mazdatrix then..

2) If the engine is out of the car, set it with the flywheel down, front pulley up, the whole time you are working on the front of the engine. Do not roll the engine horizontal until the front bolt is tightened.
From thier FAQ about keeping the Torrington bearing from falling out of its seat:

http://www.mazdatrix.com/FAQ/PULLEY.HTM

Ive personally worked on motors in this fashion, and havent suffered any ill effects.
