OK Problems with the GXL running - need help

All right, as some of you may know that I have an RX7 base, and an RX-7 GXL. Now the GXL had a dead engine in it, so we took the working motor from the base and dropped it into the GXL..

Now I'm pretty sure I have all the vac lines taken care of, and everything else is hooked up right.. Well the problem now is that it just won't idle..

You start it up, it jumps to maybe 2000 rpm, and then down to 100 - 200 stuttering and then it just dies. So we double checked the plugs, and wires, and vac lines to make sure they are in the right spot and everything appears to be in order...

The only problem is there is a small exhaust leak off the manifold due to the fact the guy who tried to put a nut on the stud somehow messed up the stud and said I'd have to drive around with an exhaust leak - ok no problem I'll just get a nut and fix that myself but it don't really run

Yet driving down the road, or sitting at a stop you have to keep your foot on the gas or else it'll stall out and die..

Now we thought it might be just bad fuel so I left and put in 5 gallons of 93 octane to help dilute some of the bad fuel and hopefully that might fix things, but it didn't appear to be an immediate fix but then again I haven't really driven it since it was fueled up..

Now I'm totally clueless what could be wrong, the plugs are in the right holes, and among other things it does run so-so.. I don't think an exhaust leak would really not allow the car to hold an idle at all...

Sounds like a vacuum leak of some sort. And a pretty big one at that. OR, the idle mixtures need to be readjusted for the new car.

Hey,
I don't think a vac leak should do that unless you've left a bunch of hoses off. Sounds more like you may have a plugged fuel line, filter or injector.
BTW, I found that my '86 GXL ran MUCH better with my transplanted motor after I set the TPS and adjusted the variable resistor and idle screw.

It was a vac leak, oil cooler wasn't plugged in, and there wasn't a ground plugged in..

Turns out that the GXL had a wire hanging off the firewall but couldn't figure out what it was for a ground from the transmission.

Then I checked down and it appears that there was a plug in the Oil cooler or the AC condenser ( not sure which ) but 2 wires weren't plugged into that.

And finally I reused the air inlet tube from the GXL, and not the base. So there was an extra vaccum line running from the tube itself to nothing and that was causing the car to stutter and not run right so I swapped tubes again. Adjusted the fast idle controller and started it up and it idles perfect and runs just as well as it did before the swap

Cool. BTW, the stock grounds really suck. I found that the engine ground consisted of a single 12ga lead connected to a stupid little blade connector on the firewall. I left the stock connector in place (I like redundant systems), ran 8ga wire w/ring terminals from the neg battery cable to the engine and then from the engine to the firewall. Made the car run smoother and start easier. Best bang-for-the-buck I've put in the car yet!
