More info;

FB - 1978-1980 (also known as Series I)
FB - 1981-1983 (also known as Series II)
FB - 1984-1985 (also known as Series III)
FC - 1986-1988 (also known as Series IV)
FC - 1989-1991 (also known as Series V)

FD - 1992 on (also known as Series VI)

(Was there an FA??)

I hope that's all correct, but I'm sure it's not...

There were also SA2 first gens.
The SA2, FB. FC. and FD were identifiers in the vin.
My question is where does the 3S come from in the FC3S and FD3S.
FC vins are...
FC33 for coupes
FC35 for the verts

Ok, here's my guess on the 3S.

look at the vins for the FC. Good, now what do both have in common?

FC3

now whats that plural?

FC3S

How about this...
ALL FC's in Japan came with VIN's that start with "FC3S" - i.e. FC3S-xxxxxx.

The North Ameican VIN's seem like Mazda was required to adhere to some weird standard...

I thought it was FC3S for coupes, and FCS3 for verts or something like that
and FD3S for third gens, FB3S for 81-85 1st gens, SA22C for 79-80 first gens
or SA, FB (FB is most common nickname for any year of first gen), FC, or FD

RETed: I never knew that, hmmm
