oil pressure sending unit

so i just did my own clutch job, and when i was finished i plugged the oil pressure sending unit in and the gauge spiked up. i decided it was ok to drive with it for one day, because i thought it would eventually ride down, but it just got the point where the needle dropped under the numbers on the gauge. i removed the unit again and cleaned all the connections, and its still dropped down. is there anyway to check if its the oil pressure sending unit thats bad, and does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it? thanks guys

The original senders can go bad with age. Your best bet is to check the oil pressure with a aftermarket mechanical or electrical gauge. You can use a 1/8" BSPT to 1/8" NPT adapter in the stock location with the the original sender removed, or tap a 1/8" NPT hole in the oil filter pedestal. Several vendors also sell replacement pedestals that have holes tapped for you. A cheap aftermarket gauge and the BSPT adapter make a nice temporary way to check it if you dont feel like mounting a gauge permanently in the car.

Buy a 80 ohm, 110 ohm, 200 ohm and about three or four infinity resistors and put them on the end of the senders wire. Other end of the resistor to gnd. Read the gauge after two minutes go by.

See series five FSM, BODY ELECTRICAL.

Mazdatrix has this part for around $12.00 if you need one.

that would be fine, cuz the guy i had working with me just snipped the clip off and grounded what was left so i could just solder it and heat shrink it anyways, how much would you want for it?

The lack of that capacitor will not make the gauge NOT work.

Denting the body of the oil pressure sending unit can really get it reading out of whack/high as well.
