Oil pan hole - Cold assist plug!

I managed to put the ONE oil pan on my turbo motor that had that stupid cold start assist on it *facepalm*. Motor is now in the car, and I'm looking for the easiest way to plug the extra hole.

Oil drain is M14x1.5. This hole is a bit larger. I picked up a M16x1.5 plug, but it doesn't work. The size seems correct, but the threads are off.

Anyone know what size it is? M16x1.25?

^Just like you say, try the m16x1.25

If it doesn't fit perfect, who cares. Jam it in there, you are never going to need that hole anyway. Crude, but hey, it'll work.

Jesus.

Do it the right way, take a thread pitch gauge, find the thread pitch, and use the right bolt. Might wana put a little rtv on the bolt too to make sure there are no leaks, or a gasket/washer.

i am completely confused with different oil pans for the fc? i didnt know there were cold start plugs? anyhow, doesnt the stock sensor that is in there plug the hole? cant you just leave the stock sensor in there? i'm sure there are some other chassis bolts that fit that hole if the stock sensor doesnt. i have a huge bin of of random chassis bolts that i'm sure i could find a match.

I think he meant Sub-zero assist (but I thought that was for the coolant)

i know there is a piece for the sub zero assist on the LIM and a reservoir by the firewall on the passenger side (probably s4's only) but a separate sensor on the oil pan? never heard of it. but i get rid of all the un-necessary stuff on my fc's.

i just put the sensor back in and cut the wire off of it. the majority of FCs never had a cold start assist sensor in the pan though, mine had one in the radiator and oil pan... all that **** went bye bye.

I can take a picture for you. It's right next to the oil level sensor.

The sub-zero system uses an oil thermo switch in the oil pan to signal when it's cold enough for it to turn on, while starting, sending coolant from the reservoir (firewall pass. side) to the intake as stated. The one you mention in the rad (assuming you mean the one at the bottom driver's side LHD) is for emmissions.

Yeah, I have a thread gauge, but I can barely feel the hole, much less see it. The oilpan is on the engine, and the engine is in the car, and there's about two inches of space between the oilpan and the subframe. I'm all for doing things the right way, which is why I didn't try to jam the m16x1.5 plug in there.

That's really the best idea...however, I have no idea what this sensor looks like or where it could be...I have parts from half a dozen 4 cylinders and probably about 8 or 9 13b's laying around...too many parts! I had three 13b oil pans and I picked the cleanest one and threw it on, I don't think the sensor was in it when I did so, and I don't remember removing a plug. I'll do some digging and see what I can find.

When I find the sensor, I'll check the thread size so the next moron in this situation has a way out...lol

I know your pain. About this time last year I had to do a motor swap and the motor i bought had this extra sensor. well somehow i ended up losing this sensor and had to go the local ace hardware. I bought about 3 different drain plugs and luckily one of them fit. When i get home from work i'll take a look and see if I can help with the size. I got a pic of this oil pan too i'll post if it hasn't been by the time i get there.

EDIT: well damn, i actually made a thread myself when i ran into the issue. Pic of oil pan is in the thread.

Dude, if you could find the size, that would be fantastic! Then I would at least know what I'm looking for.

Well, nowhere in town has an M16x1.25 bolt or plug. NAPA was able to order me a plug, hopefully it's the right size.

well that thread is as good as i got on the size, threw the bag away that had the size on it.. but looking at the Master Nut and Bolt list (https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=367392 ), it says that bolt is in fact M16 X 1.5

Other

Thermostat Housing: M6 x 1.0 , short bolts

Thermostat: M12 x 1.25

Skid Plate: 10mm flanges heads ::: probably a 6mm x 1.0

Large bolt going through UIM into LIM : M8, course thread. Length is about 3-4 inches (thats a quote from Aaron )

S4 Air Intake Sensor: M10 x 1.0

Cold Start Assist Sender: 16mm x 1.5

So if your new one does in fact fit maybe we should get this changed in the FAQ. If your new one doesn't fit, maybe just try some finesse on the 1.5 you bought earlier. Good Luck!

Jesus H. Christ, this is frustrating. I'll try the 1.25 and then I'll MAKE the 1.5 fit, I guess.

Problem FINALLY solved!

The 1.25 didn't fit...it threaded in about a full turn and then began binding...which got me thinking about the 1.5, I couldn't even get it started.

I went back and (again) bought the M16x1.5 plug I had returned and tried it again. Nada. I reached inside the oil pan hole and noticed there is a lip on the inside of the hole, it's not 16mm all the way through!

I cut the "pilot point" off the M16x1.5 plug and it went right in! The blank spot before the threads start on the plug was hitting that lip, and I was just catching enough of the first thread to make it feel like crossthreading.

Thanks guys, case closed.

It was an oil pan plug, so it came with a gasket. If it leaks, I didn't strip anything putting it in, it will be easy enough to fix.
