Oil leaks out of the shifter reservoir

'87 N/A: Within 500 miles from the time I put oil in the shifter reservoir, it all leaks out. Where is it leaking from and how can I stop it from leaking?

You have to find out where its leaking from, we can't magically tell you. Your best bet is to jack up the car so that its even to the ground and have a friend pour in some oil and see where its leaking. Then report back.

...yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I was hoping it was a common problem with a known fix.

Well, my theory is that there is two places it leaking out of...but I couldn't tell you for sure.

1. Rear Seal - easy to change
2. Transmission tailstock - requires removal of trans.

Of course, there may be a hole in your trans, who knows.

The shifter reservoir is separate from the rest of the transmission.

It is probably leaking from the side plate of the reservoir, or the top where the rubber seals will most certainly be torn.

To be honest, I just fill the box with grease.

Extension Housing Tube

My guess is that your problem is number 3 (Rod Cover) on the attached diagram. This is actually a tube that the shift rod passes through into the transmission. Had that problem with my S5 and replacing the tube w/integrated seals cured the problem. The tech that replaced the tube indicated that this problem was not uncommon. He was able to drop the tranny enough to allow for replacement of the tube. Of course, the fix is not cheap unless you are willing to do the work yourself. Requires removal of some exhaust parts, drive shaft, etc.
