Oil Leak

I have an oil leak that is just bugging to hell out of me on my 90 GXL!

Here is little history on my N/A S5 and a list of its mods

Engine List:
2 pc. 2mm Apex seals & springs (Atkens)
Solid corner seals with FD springs (Atkens)
New side seals and springs
All new O-rings and springs to dress the rotors
Thermal pellet (Atkens)
New front and rear rotor bearings
New front and rear stationary gear bearings
Water jacket mod
Complete overhaul gasket kit
HKS air filter
Port matched upper to middle to lower to block
5th and 6th port sleeves removed
ACV removed
Mild port on intake
Street port exhaust
Double belt ALT pulley
E-Fan
Racing Beat exhaust (header, presilencer & mufflers)
Racing Beat 12lb aluminum flywheel with AT counter weight
Center Force clutch (duel friction)

Suspension:
Eibach front and rear sway bars
KYB AGX adjustable shocks struts
Suspension Tech. Sport lowering springs
TEIN front adjustable camber pillow plates
TEIN rear pillow ball plates
Energy Suspension hyperflex kit
Enkei RPM2’s
Front 17x8 +35 offset
Rear 17x9 +40 offset
Falken 451 tires
Front 225/45/17
Rear 255/40/17
Drilled and slotted rotors
PBR ceramic pads
Stainless steel braided brake lines
All calipers rebuilt
New front bearings with races (Hub Mod, yeah that was fun!)

I’m sure I forgetting a few things but that the majority of it.

All right here is the history, I rebuilt my motor exactly two years ago, it has roughly 15-20 thousand miles on it. Around 10 to 12 months after rebuild it started a small oil leak at the rear of engine. I figured no big deal at the time. I had just bought all new suspension and brakes for it and figured while I’m installing the new parts I’ll take a look at the oil leak. After taking a look at it I came up with the conclusion that it was the rear main seal. Then after taking me about 3 months to finish installing all the suspension and brake parts I finally got it back on the road (my day job consumes most of my free time. Around that time I was working 60 to 80 hour weeks). Then I noticed my new clutch that I installed during my rebuild (RB street strip) started slipping really bad. So, I figured the rear main was leaking bad enough to fry my clutch (witch by the way the clutch disk was covered grease). So, I bought a new clutch (center force), flywheel (RB 12lb), pilot bearing with seal, throw out bearing AND a rear main seal. Now its been about 3 months since I have installed the new clutch and guess what? The fricken oil leak is back!

Now, after boring you guys with all that gibber gabber above, here is the real question. What is the chance of my new rear main seal leaking???? Or could it be something else?

Oh by the way, I was able to remove the inspection plate near the oil filter and wiped the back of the aluminum flywheel and it was oil free and my clutch is still grabbing like new. So I'm guessing the oil hasn't gotten to the clutch disk yet (thank God!). But I was able to see that there was some oil all on the back of the motor all around the tension bolts......... and its leaking out of the drain hole on the bottom of the bell housing. Oh..... and it is engine oil not gear oil I smelled it to be sure.

It sounds like it's time to take the tranny out and replace the rear main seal on the engine before the new clutch gets oil soaked.

Don't the statioary gears have orings on them to prevent oil from leaking? Did you install them properly?

Yes, you are correct there is a O-ring on the Rear Stationary gear. That o-ring sits in a groove on the stationary gear. I could see how the o-ring could get messed up while sliding the gear into the housing. I guess it could pinch going in or maybe even getting cut or rolling out of place. Thanks for thinking outside the box TehMonkay. I think when i pull the tranny i will be definitely be looking at that.

has anybody had this o-ring leak on them after installing a new rear stationary gear??
