Oil Leak!

I've been having a difficult time trying to solve an oil leak coming from the front of my engine. The leaks seems to be coming from the OMP, although it is at the back upper corner, so I can't see in there when the pump is installed. Running the engine for about 5min results in a 6in diameter puddle. I went and got a new o-ring from a mazda dealership, and installed it, but no luck, still leaked. I figured it just wasn't making a good seal, so I filled the o-ring groove with some black gasket maker, put the o-ring back in and let it cure overnight. started it this morning, and still there is a leak. I'm thinking it might be the front cover gasket? Would it be likely to leak only from that small area behind the OMP? I also noticed that the oil pressure reads fairly high (45psi at idle, about 60-70@3krpm stock gauge). I just picked up this 91' T2 a few months ago, and It has a mazda reman engine with about 30k miles on it. I think I read somewhere that the remans were known for bad front seals? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Same issue

I read your posting and I have same issue with 1985 RX7 GSL 12A engine oil leak traced to front right of engine. Coming from area behind Oil Metering Pump. Have become frustrated and am close to calling in Mazda Mechanic who knows rotaries. What is your status?

the MOP itself has plenty of places it could be leaking. first, where it mates to the engine is an obvious spot to look. but also, there is a washer on either side of each of the four bolts that the oil lines come out of. that's at least 8 different places right there that could be leaking, if any of those copper washers has been damaged or something. the MOP also comes apart, in two pieces, so there could potentially be a leak there.

from your description, it sounds like you've mostly identified that the oil is not coming from the MOP, but since you've already had it out in your hand, and you know how much work that entails, you might want to take it out again and check all the pieces of the MOP before you delve into a more involved part of the motor.

if you remove the coppers washers you should recondition them, or replace them altogether before reassembly. redneck recondition method: lay the washer flat on a piece of sandpaper (or concrete floor if you're really redneck) and slide them back and forth until the surfaces are uniform texture. you don't want any indentions left in the copper from where they were tightened down before.

If you are getting a 6 inch diameter puddle after 5 minutes, then it won't be any of the metering oil pump lines leaking. They pump only a few CC a minute.

Standard troubleshooting for oil leaks is to TOTALLY clean and degrease the engine, then run it for a few minutes, then see if you can spot the leak. You NEED to start with a clean engine, because oil spreads easily. The leak almost always comes from above where you are seeing it.

In your case, I think that you will probably find a leaking gasket or line around the turbo oil drain area.
