Bypass Valve

The only possible way for an oil cooler to malfunction (other than a leak) is for the bypass valve to stick open.

The valve is located under the large "nut" on the bottom left side of the cooler. Remove this valve and check its operation heating it up in a pan of oil and using a known accurate thermometer to determine if and at what temp it closes.

This valve functions in exactly the same way as the eccentric shaft oil bypass valve.

It should begin to close at around 130 deg f. The protrusion of the valve pin should be more than 5MM at 149 deg f. Mine stuck out more like 10mm.

Check out your entire cooling system (radiator and oil cooler) to make certain there is no debris clogging the fins and preventing proper air flow through them.

The plastic pan under the engine and the fan shroud are also vital to have installed.
