Oil baffle plate

Is there a REAL benifit to use a oil baffle plate? Is it worth the $53 from Racing beat for one? Also is it good or bad to use a Oil baffle plate on a car that will see alot of street use? My car will prolly see about 70% street and 30% track, maybe more or less, but the street use won't be like a walk in the park

For pure street driving, no. If you have any kind of track useage planned, it's certainly worth the trouble to install. However, you can easily make one yourself for about $5 worth of aluminium and an hour or two with a jig-saw.

Off the Mazdatrix site. This is the "template" I used to make mine.

I think it's worth it, even for spirited street driving.
The oil can slosh pretty far up - we've seen it climb up the oil filler neck!
For a reasonable priced part, it's worth the insurance.
The downside?  Getting it to seal is next to impossible.

Why is it next to impossible to seal? What causes the problems? If it is imposible to seal then why use it?

You guys using 2 gaskets? I haven't bought one yet but I plan on it. I read that you should use a gasket between the engine and the baffle, and another between the baffle and the oil pan.

Yeah that is what I read as well, so if you follow that then you should not have a problem sealing it right?

When we tried using double Mazda OEM paper gaskets, the thread engagement is not enough, and you end up stripping some of the holes.

Wouldn't welding warp the oil pan?

I wouldn't think so, it's only quite light guage 'normal' steel, don't even need to heat it up to get a good weld or anything, I welded a bung into my sump for an oil return, no warpage at all.

This is a great thread to come up now, I may aswell get one made up for my new engine, as it sees at least one track day a month (pending on wether or not its running...... )

I recently purchased an oil baffle plate during my visit to Mazdatrix.

Just as some friendly advice, the sales rep told me to spray the plate w/ acetone (I was planning to do this anyway). He also suggested using the RTV sealant (he doesn't use the Mazda paper gaskets).

I have yet to mount the baffle plate though...will find out if I can get it to seal properly soon...

Do follow the directions on the RTV tube.
Clean seal surfaces.
Thin coat both (in this case all 4) surfaces & partial cure before assembly.

I use the blue stuff on cooling system seals, & the red (high temp) stuff elsewhwere except exhaust.

I've never had a leak..

What about trying to find longer bolts to replace the oem ones?

I noticed people mentioned about welding it in, has anyone done this?

Gotta love hIGGI's Innovativeness!

I've just acquired a Baffle Plate. In fact, It's sitting right here beside me...this Is definetly on the bolt-on list, along with solid Engine Mounts that will replace the 2 broken ones that were Installed on my blown, less than 989kms, TII rebuilt, streetported Motor that was just put on In my TII conversion.

Would it be good or bad to make a Baffle plate out of aluminium? How thick/thin should it be?
