Oh noes! Car is burning oil.

Well this sucks. I spent 3 months without my car running only to have an engine that burns about 3-4 times the normal amount of oil (about 4.5 quarts in almost 1000 miles).

What's strange is that I didn't mess with the oil rings at all, and they worked fine before (although one of them might have fallen out, and I put it back in).

I guess that's a sign to listen to what Mazdaspeed says and replace them.

Perhaps I should be glad that it drinks oil instead of just spewing it, because a car that makes a volcano at all RPMs is undriveable.

I'm going to switch to 20w50 and see if that makes an improvement, since it's really hot right now anyway (and 10w30 is really for winter).

It's an S5, so assumably no.

There's no oil on the plugs, and the exhaust isn't oily either.

The OMP only uses about 1 quart every thousand miles or so, so I'm losing over 3 quarts out the exhaust (it smokes a little bit, more when you rev it higher and let off).

I know that. I think I'd rather carry jug of oil around than have to rebuild it again (which would be the fourth time for this engine...lol) though. At least this way it probably reduces housing wear pretty significantly...lol

I did that for about a year before the rings were toast and I had a rolling smoke machine.

A lot of Rotaries burn a crap load of oil off at higher RPM decel. Mine does. I'll launch thru the timing lights at the autocross, redline first and shift into second...and if you look in the rear view you can see I've left a cloud of oil smoke at the point of the course in which I shifted into 2nd gear. It's kind of funny actually. I copied something a friend of mine does and any time some jackass cuts me off or something, I'll get in front of him, hold redline for just a second then let off to smoke him out. Ah...revenge.

Immature acts aside, while my car gives a healthy puff at redline decel, it doesn't excessively burn oil in my opinion. 1 1/2 quarts usually lasts me my oil change depending on how hard I drive it.
