you might have installed the assembly wrong and the floater might be caught. I know when I bought my car the gas gauge didn't work, and I just took the assembly out and put it back in and it worked fine.

intermittently working gas guages are also commonly caused by dirty contacts on the back of the guage. If it works when the tank is full then suddenly drops to E, it has nothing to do with your pump and the guage needs cleaning. If it doesn't work at all then take eage8's advice.

that's really weird... I would just try to clean all the connectors... either that or strat testing stuff with a multimeter or something.

My guess is there's not enough voltage to the pump and when it runs it's draining so much that it can't send a proper signal back. Check the voltages!
