Oh man- rear 1/4 issues

Doing the body work on my car this morning, and I came around to my driver's side rear quarter. More specifically the upper right part of the wheel well. There's nothing left of it. Its like the inner and outer wall seam split, and it rusted badly. Its like that on the passenger side too. I'll get pics tomorrow, but its not pretty. You guys run into a problem like that?

Rick

Mine was like that when I got it and I just fiberglassed over it after cutting the cancerous crap out.

I do need to go back and make it look a little straighter in the future, but it's better then rust.

I have seen a couple of other FCs that were rusting in the same places as well. It seems they like to rust on the rear fo the rocker panels and the rear of the front quarters as well.

Yep, exactly. I've spent the last two days on the passenger side rocker alone. The thing that sucked about the rust in the rear quarter was that it actually went into the wheel well lip.

Ick, that blows. My rockers still look uneven so I'm molding some fiberglass extenders that will decrease the gap between the rockers and the road to match my new front lip and it will straighten things out again.

How much money and work is it to cut out rust and fiberglass it? I am totally unfamiliar with body work. I just got my 7 from Robbinsdale, badly rusted drivers rear quarter.

It's not too bad. I just used a rotary air tool with a cutting wheel I bought at Home Depot and cut all the rusted crap out, then bought some fiberglass mat, resin, and spread tools and went to town.

You basically cut the mat to the size you need it (big enough to cover the hole and a little overlap to stick to the good body parts), mix the resin, apply it and make sure the cloth is soaked , rinse, repeat until it's solid (about three layers).

Then I usually bondo it, then sand, prime and paint.

If they're big holes it's more complicated and you need to actually weld new sheet metal on.
