in reality you probably won't notice a difference between the 2, the S5 does flow a hair more.

Have read many posts, unbelievable amount of knowledge and extremely helpful.
Over the years there have been a few that I've complemented and just thought another addition would be in order.

Been years ago, but I had a new '88 TII, then purchased the '89 TII the following year and
visually, the OEM mufflers appeared to be the same, and have the same chrome tips. As far as flow
couldn't say as the '88 was designed with a trailing plug problem and they were "out" most of the
time before a big powwow at the dealership with Mazda reps, they bought the car back and gave me the
'89 at the dealers cost. Had to wait as the '89 wasn't out at the time of agreement and driving the '88
on the 2 leading plugs was to say the least, annoying.
As of today, I run an exhaust with the precat eliminated, factory stock main cat along with the OEM
Y pipe and mufflers-12 PSI also.

FYI-
Front and main cat is also different on the '89 TII.
Y pipe on the '89 is also different, same the '88 covert, and all '89 models. The '88TII and other models
except convt. used another Y pipe.
Certainly couldn't say why or what the changes might be.

May wonder why the stock exhaust isn't gone by now, but the car hasn't seen rain or any inclement
weather since 1992 and is stored in a garage about 100' from the house.

I believe the factory S5 mufflers have a longer tube connecting to the exhaust tip since the S5 rear bumper cover bulges out more at the bottom (especially around the exhaust tips.) The only reason I mention this is because I had a friend with an S5 car running S4 factory mufflers and they didn't look right. The muffler tips were too short by about two inches.

from what i remember, the ID was a very small amount larger, the Y pipe had a better defined split and the tips protrude slightly further.

i run the stock S5 TII catback on my car when in stealth mode and even at about 350whp it doesn't feel extremely congested compared to the single 3" i use alternatively.

the Y pipe is easier, we used to sell a ton of those.

there used to be several part numbers, but its basically an NA and T2, the T2 was slightly larger diameter pipe. if you bought one new, now, you just get the T2.
