Odd Sound
Hey,
I searched and found a thread similar to my problem: Here
Car: S5 TII
Anyway, about three days ago I noticed this weird rattling/buzzing kind of sound when the car was revved above 3000rpm. The sound doesent happen if it is in neutral or the clutch petal is in. It came and went for the first two days, and I didn't worry too much about it.
I have always had the same kind of 'whirring' desbribed in the beginning of that thread, since I rebuilt my engine and got a 6-puck disc. However, today It got suddenly worse. Theres now this kind of loose scraping kind of sound, much louder than before. Its loudest when a: I slip the clutch and b: when its revved above 3000rpm. All of the bearings were replaced ~1350 miles ago.
I have a brand new ACT 6-puck Clutch Disc, a Centerforce Clutch(don't know how old) and i'm not sure about the flywheel. The previous owner said it was aftermarket, but it looks stock to me. I resurfaced it before I dropped the engine in. I have ultra high performance redline tranny fluid(the blue stuff), replaced about 500 miles ago. As far as I know the tranny and drivetrain are untouched and have 106,000 miles on them.
Also, I think I should add that I have not felt any noticeable change in drivability of the car. The clutch feels the same as the first day I drove it, as well as the tranny and shifting- even throughout this whole scraping saga.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The heat shields arent on there right now.
Update: Now, I noticed when I start it it makes the sound in neutral as well... After it warmed up it went away when in neutral. Also, it sounds almost like an exhaust leak now... Striking similar to an exhaust leak: but it still doesent make the sound when in neutral or with the clutch in. Its pretty damn loud too. I thought i might wake up the neighbors with a 1500rpm idle.
Also, I noticed a very trace amount of clutch smell when I was driving it. That scared me, and I proceeded to drive home in neutral as much as possible.
Driving still feels completely normal.
Maybe a loose bolt holding down the clutch?
Any more ideas or opinions?

Well, problem solved. I talked with Ted for a while about it and he guessed it was an exhaust leak. I had guessed that first because of the sound, but because it stopped making it in neutral and with the clutch in I discarded that guess. We think that it didn't make the sound when in neutral because there wasn't enough load/turbo to create enough exhaust to make any sound.
He was right. Turns out the two bolts between the RB downpipe and prescilencer were barely even keeping the two components held together, much less air tight. There was about a 1/4-1/2 inch gap between the two.
Started it up and she sounded good as new.
Thankfully it was a free fix. Thanks anyway to you guys who helped.
