Odd problem with my RX, help please!

Coming back from the mall tonight, my RX began to do something really wierd. Going up a small hill, I decided to run it up to redline. After about 3500rpm's, it started to sound really wierd - very much like a turbocharged engine. I head vrrrrrrrssssssssssssssssssssssh, like pressure was escaping! This really puzzled me. To top it off, it wasn't eager to climb through the powerband at all.

This sort of puzzled me, so I stopped on a backroad, and tried to run first gear to redline. Same funny noise, wierd smell, and same power defecit.

What's going on with the old girl? She's an '87 Sport.

I had a similar noise, and it turned out to be a vacuum hose had popped off while I was tinkering w/ mine earlier that day. Check for intake leaks as well.

I had a similar sound, but I didn't seem to be losing power. Finally, I found that it occurred when the heater control was at the halfway point between cold and hot. Put it all the way hot or cold, and if it goes away, you should be okay. It could be a vaccuum hose too I suppose like rico05 said.
