Is ethanol now mandated in all states? Where can you still get gas without ethanol?

Octane

FYI the FC turbo and non-turbo cars were originally designed for a minimum of 87 PON, and a maximum of 10% ethanol. This information is quite plainly printed in the owner's manual, but for some reason the people on this forum prefer to go by myths and rumors rather than cracking open an official manual.

However, premium octane is probably in order for this situation.

If you guys are worried about build-up, then just use a Top-Tier brand of gasoline.

stock turboII's run perfectly fine on 87 octane, once you start upping the boost its wise to switch to premium though.

I dunno about US, but here in canada it's still available. The Shell 91 octane we get here doesn't have any.

I was advising against ethanol since we have a brand here "sunoco ultra 94" that is ethanol blended to get the extra octane, and without compensating for the extra fuel consumption you are leaning the mixture which may void the benefits of the higher octane. Also if you get water in the tank the eth can precipitate out leaving a layer of eth/water and a layer of pure gas (which certainly won't have the same octane rating as with the ethanol blended in).

I still stand by my recommendation to run 91 in a stock T2. Too many things can easily go wrong with these old cars and it helps to have a safety buffer.

To the original poster, if you are still on stock EFI you may be pushing your luck. Some people have better luck than others... It definately helps to make sure all your systems are in tip top shape, eg: fuel pump/filter/injectors etc

well, if you drive 100 miles a day, running 87 was definitely saving me money, even if i happened to break something internally.
