octane recommendations

hey guys

i am about to turbo my engine... a gslse engine... and i was told by a friend that knows alot about cars that i should only have to run 89 octane, cuz since my engine is already high compression thats all it should need, and he said that i shouldnt need to run 94 oct... what do you guys think? cuz i dont know... if i can run 89 or 87 then AWESOME... lol save me money... if not so be it... just let me know... thanks!

Do you have any idea of how much boost you plan on running? The point of higher octane is to decrease chances of detonation. Unfortunately, having higher compression rotors INCREASES the chance of detonation, even at lower boost levels. So i'm guessing at anything more than 5 PSI (this is a guess, I've never turbo'd an engine!), you're going to have to look at increased octane..

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in, but you'll really need to tell us your goal PSI/CFM.
