Talking Obligatory NA to TII thread...

For the last 2 days I've been working on the TII DRIVETRAIN swap with some help from PaulC. Here's what I've learned:

1) I am getting too old and lazy to do this stuff. I don't want to be a mechanic when I grow up!

2) Grease likes me. It gets all over me and is hard to get off!

Ok, now for the REAL lessons:

1) The diff swap is EASY, but you really need 3 jacks. Note that I changed the entire subframe, not just the differential.

2) The transmission swap isn't TOO bad, but there are some "issues" to deal with, which follow...

a) The flywheel is a BITCH. It requires a 2 1/8" socket (I think it's 53 mm?? Maybe 54mm... Chris at RP said to use the 2 1/8) and a BIG breaker bar or an impact. Then you have to be creative to get it off too. Going back on with the TII one is almost as bad as coming off.

b) The solonoid is on the BOTTOM of the TII starter, and you have to switch a wire around to make it fit, since the wire on the harness is too short.

c) The wires for the backup lights, neutral safety switch, etc. are too short on the TII transmission, you have to extend all of them except the 2 wires in a single plug.

d) The TII clutch slave cylinder IS different. The NA one will not work.

I picked up a REALLY cool camber adjustment rod for the rear from RP. (Might as well change it while the rear subframe is out, right?) It's anodized aluminum with spherical bearing ends, and can be adjusted without unbolting it... it's sweet. Chris said it was a prototype from Ground Control I think? Anyhow, very nice part.

I used, and recommend that anyone doing this uses, a LOT of NEW parts. Fresh starter, clutch and related components, clutch slave cylinder, changed the shifter bushings, etc.

I seriously would NOT do this to an NA coupe. It's not worth it.

Incidentally, convertibles have a couple extra braces on the bottom that have to be removed. This process has been really slow due to having to constantly run to the parts store for stuff (also known as bad planning) and the weather conditions. (Pretty cool with intermittant rain.) Driving impressions to follow...

Hey Brad~
Umm, I know this is kinda a strange request, and maybe it's too late, but if your wrote down or rememeber all of the steps that you took and how you did everything, I would like a copy of "instructions" on how to do this. Anyone else that may have made this swap...I would truly appreciate any sets of instructions on how to put a TII into my vert. Thanks!
