NRG short hub requires trimming column surround?
I finally got around to installing the NRG short hub adapter & quick release for my new steering wheel- and there doesn't seem to be any way to make it fit without trimming the steering column surround- the short hub base is just too big of a diameter to fit inside it. Has anyone else installed one of these and can confirm that I'm not just a complete idiot and doing something wrong?

Now that you've ventured into the land of aftermarket parts, some modification is to be expected.
I know that Grant hubs will rub on the surround, so it doesn't surprise me that other hubs will too.
What I would do is remove the surround and install the wheel/hub.
Start looking in junkyards/classifieds for a replacement surround.
If you find that you like the NRG and decide to keep it, modify the surround knowing that you have a stock replacement already lined up.
I ran a Grant wheel/hub for about six months before I decided I didn't care for the sloppy fit (the splines are not as closely made as the stock wheelhub) and was able to revert back to stock with no evidence of tampering.
To be fair, even if I had kept the modified surround, the stock wheel would have covered up the enlarged opening that the Grant needed, so it wouldn't have been a big deal.
Sorry for the zombie bump, but I just installed my NRG Shot Hub and I removed the surrounds, but if I tighten it too much it clamps the steering and Im pretty sure something plastic is going to break. Who has successfully installed an NRG hub?
Edit, I guess that plastic bit in the way is the turn signal reset wheel. I'm still debating on how I should go about this.

I have an NRG short hub and had to cut up the column surround. Simply shaving the rim of this column was not enough. You have to cut into the forward face of the cover. The only problem with doing so is that there are two male/female locating pins that will end up getting cut off. I didn't run into a problem with the signal reset wheel.
