NOOBIE....OMFG....help?

undefined

So I just go my first Rx7...I have always wanted an Rx7 and finally got one.
It's a 1986 non turbo....manual, 105,000 miles....small oil leak
I got it for $900
I'm going to a trade school so I know about my cars but honestly....Just looking at that BEAUTIFUL Rotary scares the crap out of me.
I need a new suspension
Brakes
Tires....
And I don't know if this is normal on Rotary's but the oil pressure guage fluxuates up and down...? Is that the Oil injection thing? I just bought a Chiltons But you guy's are pro and feel comfortable asking you.
So My only problem is that...if it is a problem...When I drive I hear this wierd little metallic sound like the exhaust cover isn't fully attached and bouncing around when I throttle? Is this a common problem and what could it be?

Also....you pro's are a wealth of information and knowledge...Is there anything that I should check out or look for, Basically I want any hints or tips you can offer this noob.

Thanks Guys
Justin

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal, welcome to the forum.

Do a good tune up on it, (plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc). This will get you more comfortable with the car and give you a better understanding of how it works.

The stock oil pressure gauges aren't known for their accuracy, but check the connection between the wire for it and the sender. It's a single wire located just below the oil filter. It has a black connector if I remember right.

Yep, sounds like an exaust rattle somewhere.

Also, I like the Haynes manual a million times better than the Chiltons.

is the noise speed specific? example.....doesn't happen at 30 mph but the car vibrates at 60+mph.

The oil pressure gauge should fluctuate between 30(no throttle) and 60 (accelerating).

oil pressure on OEM gauge starts failing after 100000. I have 105 also and just replace(due to the gauges not working right) my water temp/oil pressure gauge to aftermarket ones on the pillar. Do a tune up and replace gauge you should be fine 100000 miles is still a baby. Good luck and welcome.

The oil pressure goes and down because it's based on the speed of your engine. Rev the engine, the pressure goes up. However, other people are right, the things aren't very accurate.

You make reference to "you pros", but guess what? We were all noobs at one time. Rotaries are a lot different from piston bangers, but much better. There are factory service manuals on line here in this forum site. Use them. Then start reading as many of these posts as you have time. Nearly every possible issue you may come across has probably been addressed somewhere sometime here.

You will have to learn what a throttle position sensor is and how to adjust it. You will have to learn what a crank angle sensor is and how to adjust that. You will have to learn what a bypass air control sensor is and what it does.

Lots of stuff, but its fun and these cars are instantly addictive. Enjoy this forum and your new car. Pretty soon you will be a pro.
