Non Tilt to Tilt Steering Column Conversion

I've checked the achives for info but found the discussions a little vague. I have an '88 base model with no power steering. I took the car to the track for the first time and I found it impossible for me to 'heel and toe' down shift. My upper thigh kept hitting the steering wheel. After talking with the instructor, we decided that some "tilt-up" would make things better. Any info on whether this conversion is feasible would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Tilt wheels only really give you adjustment down. Not much, if any adjustment up.

Hmmmm. I guess I better find a car with tilt and check it out for clearance. I'll also check out the smaller wheel option but I'm a little concerned with steering effort (non-power) and the track has some tight corners which might make it necessary to do a hand X-over.

Thanks for the comments.
