You can get away with it in some cars, but in ours this will lead to an overheating situation. Get a new one in there, preferably a OEM thermostat and hopefully the car has not overheated already.

you have an 87. the 1/4 mark is normal. the halfway mark means your in dead mans territory.

Yeah, there's a discrepancy here.
His sig shows S4 but it's the S5 that has the plastic thermostat housing.
Frankenstein engine?

While it is true that an S4 runs about 1/4 on the gauge, half way is not exactly a problem. 1/4 is about thermostat temperature (86 degrees if I remember correctly) and halfway, according to the temperature on my Microtech, is 90 degrees.

please....1/2 way is nothing to worry about on an S4, I'm pretty sure its just below or right around 200* F. My gauge has crept up to 3/4 on more than one occasion (in the fast lane on the interstate...) and that was over a year ago. Just don't make it a habit.

1/2 on the S4 gauge is only around 185-190. Verified with an aftermarket gauge and my Haltech.

I don't know if I'd trust any oem temp gauge from the '80s.

I wouldn't trust newer gauges, because it was around 1990 or so that many cars started to be produced with "idiot light" gauges that aren't an actual temperature display. For example, the S5 RX-7 temp gauge has three positions: cold, normal and "new engine". I understand the FD has a similar gauge setup.

I meant that I'm not sure that I'd trust ANY temperature gauge that's 20+ years old, especially in a car that's as ...volatile as an RX-7.

That's why most of us put aftermarket ones in our cars.

hear that - once upon a time my stock temp gauge was sitting pretty @ 1/2 way up the gauge but my aftermarket gauge told the truth - the engine was @ 245! Fortunately I still have my engine and the resulting compression test shows everything is still cool. (pardon the pun)
