Angry No Start after Tranny Replacement

Just replaced 5 sp tranny in my '88 rx7 gtu w/used one. I'm now experiencing a no start situation. Engine is rotating, starter is engaging & appears to be getting fuel. Did a compression test and that checked ok. Suggestions anyone? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

See if someone can jump start you. Did you remember to reconnect the battery? How hard was it, my s4 tranny is going to go bad in a few months and I'd like to replace it.

Battery cables were reconnected. Battery charge was good (just recharged it too be sure). Car's voltmeter reading about a 12 which is normal before starting (14-14.5 when running). I'm about to run a check on the crank angle sensor since I'm getting spark & see if that turns up anything.

Read the "Starts...dies" thread by 87 racer- I'm trying to help him with a similar problem, maybe it'll give you some ideas...

Thanks for the pointer. Have been reading 87racer's thread. Doesn't seem to be a grounding issue. Cleaned up the trans ground wire as well as the other connections (reverse light, etc) before remounting it and all looked fine (sits flush). The ground wire was mounted back to the tranny bellhousing where it was located before. I've got a 4th of July party to head to in a little bit so I'll recheck this thread once I'm back this evening. Any and all other suggestions are certainly welcome!

how many ft pounds does it take to turn the motor in neutral? Its weird that it wouldn't start up right away. unless something happened upon reinstal? I've never bent or misalieged the imput shaft but its possible to tweak it. Usually that just messes up the pilot barring though.

I have taken out engines and trannies about a million times with no complications to start back up on a simple swap.

Do you know the history of the replacement tranny? Is it junkyard?

I guess a long shot might be that there's something wrong with the tranny in such away so that its restricting normal start up. Like its not allowing the engine to turn over at a certain speed and thus having trouble firing from a lack of compression.....

Okay wait. Before all that craziness. Maybe your starter coincidentally decided to crap out. You removing it for the swap pushed it over the edge because it was about to die anyway?

Something definately changed.

Look in the car and see if the ENGINE fuse is intact.

put some atf fluid in it and it will probably start, sounds like its just flooded. Also make sure you clutch switch is hooked over by the driver side firewall.

Appreciate all the suggestions everyone posted. Smoken' was right on the money - the engine was flooded badly. I didn't realize that the car had been started and moved twice a very short distance & for a very short period of time at a friend's where the tranny was replaced. After clearing out the fuel from the rotor chambers & adding some oil, it fired right up. Another friend with a seven helped get the excess fuel out. I didn't know the procedure (at the time) but I do now. Once again, thanks to all for all the advice. Thanks to Ghetto7 for the help as well (LOL). Hope everyone has a Happy Fourth!
