What should the compression be and can it be read with the same tester as a piston eng?. Should there be 3 readings, one for each seal?

My 1986 tries to fire but will only run if I put oil in the housings. Runs great but will not idle and has no tach reading. If the tach works the eng surges will not accelerate or idle. I have to hold at 1/3 throttle to keep it running. I want to do a compression test. If it fails I have another eng that runs great in another car that got totaled by a hit and run driver this past winter. Please help
