No Smoke! Can it still be blown???

I bought a car of this guy. Ok I was about to rip the engine apart but I will yank the exaust and see if the apex seals are ok. If there good and the car doesent blow smoke then is there any other way the engine can be blown? Side seals mabey?

The easy way to tell: Do a compression test..
