No power TII.

OK this is my first Post so I am sorry if i doing it all wrong.

All right i just got my 87 TII(My first rx7) . I bought it with a street port and had the place I bought it from get it running. I drive it 800 miles to break it in and then I start to really get on the throttle to see what it had in it. Its SOOO SLOW!!!! It has no real power. I'm getting boost so I really don't think its my turbo. Some people I've talked to say that my cats or my mufflers might plugged. But I really don't think that that could hold back that much power.(I got beat by a NA, 4 door, non-VTEC Civic) I was hoping someone might have some idea of what could be my problem.

take it to get a compression test, 800 miles is a little early to start romping on the motor.

if a full 3" exhaust can give you up to 60hp, surely a plugged (down to 1-1.5") can taketh away 60 hp. the biggest thing ive learned so far is CHECK what others tell you before trying to rule it out. 99% of us cant just point out the prob and it will be fixed. educated guesses DO fix your car. me and you my friend are both lackin in that dept. try it first then report back. ive heard of people just unbolting the cats, if you can, then usin a crow bar to gut them. put them back on. then you will know for sure!

good luck

If you don't already have it, make sure to get a decent aftermarket boost gauge! This could tell you how much your boosting first off and secondly, give you an accurate vacuum reading at idle and so on. I would also check the exhaust system for clogging as mentioned earlier.

Since your motor is ported and fresh, i'd say ur vacuum at idle could range between 11-14. Then again this all depends on what kind of porting was done to the motor. While ur at it, also do a compression test. Hope this helps a bit.

I know Joe, his T2 Does NOT rev up quickly(as i noticed today) as is now, its running slightly slower than a NA . it does dog a little while under throttle. idle is normal 750-1100rpms. It boosts right around 3.5-4k rpm.

Any recamendations for a good/cheap boost guage?

even at 800miles (prolly closer to 1200) hes not pushen it much. drives pretty conservativly. never redlined as well(even still).

have you guys noticed a decent increse in power comparison from a stock cat, to a gutted cat?

Thanx

Wires on wrong or the LEAD coil is not putting out. Pull a LEAD wire off while your idling and see if you get shocked or if there is a spark from the plug wire.

If a person is judicious, he can, before starting the car, pull one of the LEAD wires out of the coil bore and just let it rest barely in the bore. Start the engine. Slowly pull the wire from the bore of the coil. It should be arcing really big as you hold it about a 1/8 th inch out of the bore. Do not lay your body on the car or touch the chassis as you pull the wire out that 1/8 to 1/4 inch. I've done it often without being zapped.

Or you could have a dead sparkplug on one of the rotors Who knows. Could be a half dozen things.

If it doesnt rev up quickly then it has low compression.

Hey, guys thanks for the help. I'll look in to all of those things.
However, even with no power I couldn't wait to start drifting. I took it out a few nights a go and ran it in to a curb and bent my frame. So, I'm really now worried about my power problem for now. After I get my frame bent out strait then I will re post about my power... Sorry ~~~~
