Sorry man, it happens. I would even take out the oil cooler and clean that when you find your replacement or rebuild

try putting some magnets on your oil filter and when you do your tune up open the old one. I know rx7.com sells special ones but don't know how much

It could be bearing material, or pieces from engine parts. Either way, its not good

Uh. That looks not so good. 30k on rebuild... who rebuilt it? Was it ported?

You can send an oil sample to Blackstone labs and have it analyzed to see what that is... http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

I sent one in recently and it had some typical wear metals as well it was over the average with gas diluition. They said once my motor wears in it should be fine.

Best of luck!

yeah it's weird b/c the motor runs fine for the most part. I revved it up and i heard a pop then it started acting funny. sounded like my throwout bearing what messed up or a had an exhaust leak and lots of power loss.

i changed all the intake gaskets and the exhaust manifold gasket, changed all the vac and fuel lines,

the car idle is pretty steady (~400) but i still have power loss around vdi. i did break the tip off the end of the solenoid but i super glued it back on.

other than this the car runs fine. but i've had a little bit of a coolant smell. I've been having coolant probs too (cracked t-stat neck). So i think the coolant smell is leftover coolant that i can't get too to clean off.

thorw out bearing is not inside the engine. Something is chewed up. Are you going to drive it till it siezes?

+1 Who built it?

Could this be from not setting the endplay correctly? Or using the wrong spacer in the bearing stack on the front?

Or not chamfering ports?

But for metal flakes like that to get into the pan, and not seize the motor makes me think its something not internal to the short block. Like somthing under the front cover... torrington bearings or something... this is just my guess as I've never seen that before.

Be sure to document it if it fails.
Best of luck!

It's something under the front cover for sure. Wedged thrust bearing or wrong endplay probably. Or improper torque on the front pulley bolt, maybe.
