nitrous/fuel questions

im planning on a nitrous install (NOS brand wet system...50 shot to start) on my 91 N/A.

scathcart has suggested an upgraded fuel pump (walbro) for safety.

question: to those of you running similar nitrous systems, did you upgrade ur pump or not? if so, what kind and how did u solve the rich-running-at-idle (or low load) problem when not using nitrous?

There's a really good writeup on nitrous somewhere in an archive, I don't remember if it's in 2nd gen or Rotary Performance.

Generally, if you significantly upgrade the fuel pump, you'll either want a resistor pack to trim it's output down at idle/low load (TII style) or an upgraded FPR that can flow enough to keep the fuel pressure in check.

Owners of imported vehicles can benefit from nitrous power, as NOS has developed safe, reliable and highly effective kits that produce from 40 to 60 hp for a large number of applications. Most of these employ dry injection technology, where the OEM fuel injection provides the required additional fuel to the motor only when the nitrous system is armed and activated at W.O.T. (wide open throttle). These systems provide excellent fuel/nitrous distribution to each cylinder, as opposed to the wet kits. However, NOS does recommend wet type kits for most turbocharged and supercharged applications due to the increased air velocity and extra heat from the forced induction.

Did I forget to mention this? You have a series 5 car. They have the pack to drop the low-load voltage to the pump. You don't need to worry about running rich at idle.

Besides, you have an S-AFC. We can just throw on the UEGO and the EGT and tuen your car.

Thanks for barfing out the NOS website. Not only does your response have nothing to do with the thread discussion, but it is obvious it comes from zero experience in using nitrous.

Rotaries already have an incredibly high intake velocity, and there are no intake valves or low spots (save the closed auxilary ports) for puddling of fuel to occur. Nitrous backfire is virtually a non-issue with the rotary under nitrous injection; this is for the same reason why the rotary engine is considered one of the few "safe engines" for using hydrogen as a fuel.

In the future, don't regurgitate information you don't undertsand. Dry nitrous has no place on the rotary engine for reasons I have stated long ago.

hey Sean,

in ur article, i believe it says i'll need a new resistor or regulator to handle the upgraded pump (walbro) or else ill run rich at idle or low loads.

but to confirm ur post above:

- the walbro will work fine as a drop in without a new/ upraded FPR or resistor?
- my car already has a resistor that can handle the walbro?

What was said in the article on the fuel resistor pretty much is directed towards S4 N/A's, not S5's. You already have the resistor pack, so you can just install the fuel pump and forget it. No need for another resistor pack or an aftermarket FPR (although the aftermarket FPR is much better than the stock unit...)

If you've got an S-AFC, why don't I just tune your idle AFR anyway? It'll only take a few minutes.
