Newbie Q: How long should I be waiting for warm-up/down on my TII?

Hi guys, I just got my '87 TII about a month ago but I've only driven it for a week. However, I know people talk about how bad it is to not let the engine warm up correctly (Because it's rotary) and how bad it is to shut it off too quickly (due to the turbo)...So I have been waiting extremes for both. If I pushed it to 7k a few times and drove fairly aggressively I wait about 2min for warm down. If I ran it fairly hard: 1min. If I just ran around the town I still wait about 30 seconds. Also, for starting it up I know I'm supposed to wait for the needle to get halfway...this takes literally about 10-15min. Should I just drive it once the idle drops to 700? So far I've just been waiting this long amount(10-15min)...and even after I've driven it and go into a restaurant, I still wait about 5-8min for it to get to the halfway point again. Am I doing this all wrong? Thanks ahead!

You dont really need to wait that long for warm up. Usually I just wait 1 minute or so and start driving. It seems to warm up faster when you drive it. Just dont get on the gas too much and keep it under 4k until it reaches the right temp. If you push your car pretty hard you can just drive the last mile or 2 easy. Getting air into the IC and radiator is better than letting it sit idling and heatsoaking. Drive it easy the last few minutes and just wait 30 seconds.

idling that long is bad...

start it up. wait 30 secs. and drive it under 3000rpm, no boost, under 1/3 throttle or so till the needle gets to normal temps. then drive it normal

for cool down. just drive a few blocks without boosting before you stop. and wait 30 secs or so.

im going to have to disagree with all of that.
idling that long is not bad. your letting it warm up slowly on its own, rather then pushing it.
ive talked to a few rx7 people who will let it warm up for 5-10min-getting the needle half way to the middle mark/ to the middle mark.

I start driving after about 30 sec to a minute. Then just take it easy until the thermostat opens. Cooling down, I just drive easy before my house. Then just shut the car off.

Excessive idling causes alot of carbon build up I believe.

Awesome, and my other TII friend seems to agree with you guys. I'll do the 1min warmup...and no boost till thermo is open. Thanks again!

I have a question, mine 7 is N/A, but should I follow the same warm up procedures with my N/A?

For me, I have the hardcore bareblock and throttlebody mod, so I let it warm up until the clutch fan turns off (45sec-1min) then drive easy until warmed up, no boost, low throttle, under 3500rpm. Cool down, easy into the parking lot then 30 sec on the turbo timer.

Start the car, let it run 30 seconds or so, then drive it easily until it warms up (about 1/4 on the temp gauge for 86-88, 1/2 for 89+).

Excessive idling wastes gas, pollutes, fouls spark plugs, causes carbon buildup, cloggs cats, contaminates oil and is just plain unnecessary.

^^^What Cake said^^^ For the N/A, I would say do the same warm up procedure but there is not much of a need to let it cool down. Turbo cars run hotter and have more places for hot air to hide.

Awesome...Yea I just wait 1min now and then drive it around really slowly barely touching the throttle and shifting at 2000-2500 rpms. Then I wait for it to go Halfway and it runs like a beaut. Also, since its hot outside I put the heater on...I notice it helps a little but it can be unbearable...should I be doing this or will it just overheat a little at idle anyway? Thanks again guys...you've been a SUPERB help.

Oh also, for the last 2 days when I cold start it in the morning it's been going immediately to 3k for like 5 seconds...then back down 1200rpms. What's happening?

thats your cold start assist system. don't worry its normal for it to rev to 3K for a bit if the cold start is still hooked up.

Thats an automated system, if you want it to stop put in your clutch and shift to first (don't let go of the clutch as you'll stall) and it SHOULD idle back down.
