newbie looking for suggestions

Yah, I finally got one. I just purchased an 87' sport rx7. Its such a great car, the owner who I bought it from bought it new and has taken such great care of it. It only has 78k on it and is in emaculate condition. Its pretty much completely stock, and I'm interested in some ideas as to modifications that you have found out that have worked great and mods that you would steer clear of doing.
Basically what are the most common, fairly cheap, mods to give my n/a a little extra power? people tell me all sorts of stuff, (ie, you should replace the cat with a test pipe and blow flames) but i figured I ask you guys, people that have actually gone through the motions and know what to do and what not to do. So if you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

get all new exhaust, you can do the VDI actuator which opens your 5th and 6th ports, homemade CAI, but to get the most of it with the least amount of money......... NITROUS

Ide first get an hks intake followed by a full exhaust then get a good clucth! you will feel a big difference. Oh considering the car is in good condition might want to change all fluids and vacuum lines!

thanks, so what does a vdi actually do differently than other intakes? what do you mean by homemade CAI? and about the clutch, any specific type or brand you'd reccomend? how much does replacement exhaust usually run, and anything in specific i need to look for there?
on another note, is getting a short shift kit worth it, its just feels so loose in there. can you get at the bushings from the top?
thanks again

I'm not sure, but wasn't it only s5's (89-91) with the VDI actuator?

By homemade CAI he means 'cold air intake'.

The price for a replacement exhaust really depends on what you get... You could get a single side exhaust 'straight pipe' custom made with a generic muffler for pretty cheap.

If you want something nice, I'd visit www.racingbeat.com and see what they have...

I don't have a short shifter in either of my rex's, but I've got one in the s13 I'm currently driving and it's WAY better than stock. I love the way it feels. Definitely worth the price.

I've heard the ACT 6 puck clutches are pretty nice.

If I were trying to make an N/A fast (which I wouldn't cause I've got a TII for that) I'd honestly consider nitrous... But you should definitely do some serious searching and make sure you know what you're doing.

BTW, sounds like a sweet car. Oh, and if you get a straight pipe, it's going to be VERY loud and you won't be able to pass emissions.

This is why I love the FC community. Had you posted that in the FD section you would have 30 posts telling you to use the search feature lol.

how much do you have to spend?

If your shifter is all loosey goosey, yea, I would reccomend changing the shifter bushings before putting the money into a short shifter, although they are very nice, and a decent investment as well. Its also possible your shifter could be worn, my friend with a 10th AE's shifter itself was worn on the ball end of the shifter that fits into the tranny. There is a small groove on it that was all messed up...

As far as making it faster, all of the above will work well. If you don't want A/C, remove it, you can also remove the air pump and get an exhaust, but will need to use one of the variant methods of opening your secondaries. You may want to consider vaccum hose simplification by removing the rats nest, and you could also block off the emissions equipment with block off plates. You can do the TB mod, and also port the TB if you wish.

If you have a **** load of cash laying around, you could always get turbo II end plates, and a mid plate, (intermediate housings, center housing) and use those to make a 4-port N/A. It would be better with a s5 rotating assembly, because of higher compression, but it isn't necessary. You could port the bejesus out of the end plates, and create a good amount of power.

You could also turbo your N/A motor, check out Aaron Cake's writeup in the FAQ, or ask one of the many who have done so, such as SonicRat, etc. This would yield a better amount of power, and would not require disassembly of the motor.

Fuel wise, you may want to look into a S-AFC if you just do the basic modifications of an exhaust and intake. The car should run more rich with an exhaust and intake, and the
S-AFC would allow you to tune your fuel better, and should increase performance a decent amount.

There are a number of ways ways to make your N/A fast, it just depends on how much your willing to spend.
