newbie

I'm new to all this so please forgive me if I seem stupid. I have a question for ya'll. I have been looking at this 88 rx 7 to buy. The body is in great condition for the age but the interior needs some major help. The car is hard to start and smokes when it does. The smoke goes away when it gets up to temp. It also smells like it's buring a little rich on the fuel. What would be good for price on something like that. The motor has just over 180k on it. They tell me that that the motor has not been rebuilt but has gone throught 4 or 5 cluthes. Any help would be great.

If peices of the interior are missing, they're pretty cheap and easy to replace (parts for sale section). Any color interior peices that are missing (or a heinous color) can be painted 'trim black' to look better. Is there white-ish smoke coming out the exhaust when you start it? If so, the car is probably losing it's internal coolant seals (not good). This would greatly reduce the value of the car. All of these cars run rich stock, so you can expect that. umm, I assume the car you're looking at is N/A, either way 180k is a lot of miles and I wouldn't expect MUCH more from the motor. You should give the car a compression test (with a modified conventional comp. tester, search). Numbers around 100psi on all rotor faces (front and rear) is what you should be looking for. Anything below this and with the smoking, means that this car (since it'll need a rebuild) would probably be worth around $1000. You should bring this car to a recommended rotary mechanic, get it checked out and whatever they say will help you better decide how much the car's worth. Post in your 'regional forum' and ask them for a decent mechanic in your area.

good luck and post pics if you get it.

Thanks. You guys are big help. The smoke is a blueish color. To tell the truth the car is at an auction here in the area. I went to look at it a couple weeks ago and the car didn't want to start. When they did get it started it had problems staying on. I know that I'm need to rebuild the motor and that's not really a big deal, It is but not really. I have alway liked the RX 7 and now I I have the some money to put into the motor and stuff.
