Nice question. I bet noone has asked how to make horsepower for cheap on this forum before.

Do a search before you ask a question next time, and you will save yourself a LOT of flaming.

But the short answer is that there isn't a whole lot you can do to up the power on a N/A car without dropping a lot of cash. Exhaust, intake, and SAFC for the most part. After that, you are looking at things like turbo swaps, porting (which requires engine teardown), and standalone ECU's.

Even with a good exhaust, intake, streetport and a standalone you would be lucky to break 200 horsepower to the wheels...after spending thousands of dollars. With that same amount of money spent on a nice turbo car you would be seeing 300+ WHP easily.

I'm pretty sure the stock setup is all the horsepower you can get from a 13b. Oh wait, you might find some tips in the search box.

The simple and short answer is that there is nothing you can do to make more power without spending some money.

For example, a full exhaust is the first step and you'll be $800 into it for a quality system at the minimum. If you can fabricate, then it's a different story.

The best advice is to make sure the car is running properly in the first place. This means a full tuneup as per the FSM (see the FAQ for downloadable copies) and troubleshooting any existing problems.

Not being a a$$ like the others but a tune up is needed w/o any question. After that get a better airfilter (K&N) better exhaust, ignition CDI box(MSD as a good one can give up to 5hp),better spark plug wires(accel 8mm) and better plugs (more spark is good),electric fan( now this is just me but I think getting rid of the clutch fan and using a electric fan would be better ),and heck why not a 25 to 50 shot of nitrous(dry i would think would be ok).

the electric fan will give u no more horsepower
use ngk plugs (oem)
use NGK wires (oem)
get a new fuel filter
change your oil
change your thermostat and fluid (use only oem or nippon stat)
K&N drop in is good or make a cold air box or air intke that is outside of the engine bay

then bend over and grab your ankles.. that way u can buy your exhaust...

SAFC

etc..

Oh yeah and search!!!

I was wondering it might not give more horse power, but wouldn't take some strain off the motor?

If the NA motor is not enough for you already then don't bother modding it. Save your money and do a turbo swap and keep the smiles going!

There shouldn't be any debate now. GTORX7 has proven with dyno results that using an E Fan instead of the stocker is good for about 10hp. Dyno Proven.

Cheap!

Gut the first 2 precats on the car! $0 unless you break something

Hollow out the plastic elbow right before the throttle body. $0

Make a custom air intake. Buy and adapter and make it fit plus a K&N filter should be around $50

Replace your shifter bushings. Its cheap and make the shifting much better. Mazdatrix.com has a great write-up on this.

Doing these things won't increase HP to much but they are cheap and make the car run much better.

IF you want more power sale your conv and buy a TII

That's the truth! You already got rid of the honda for an RX7, thats a good performance upgrade. LOL welcome to the forum.

Not much else cheap to do besides tune-up & maintenance without risking/ruining something. Search forums for common mods.

From my experience cause i too had an 88 vert...

right now

Full exhaust.. 2 1/2 headers 2 1/2 pipe...
Block off plates are ******* necessary
Take off all port actuators in the bottom and top intake.. just throw them the **** out...
intake.. and good spark plugs and good wires..

you should be alright with that.. that **** will do wonders for the car

but another thing the vert has a really ******* shitty rear..

get a new one.. from a turbo 2

either a 411 or a 430 i think..

rip out the ac power steering and some other garbage
and get a double altenator thing
and you will be more than satisfied trust me

block off plates = 50
new exhaust = like 150
Intake = free I just ripped all the boxes off and i have it running straight from the Mass Air Flow sensor with a panty hose over it
Rear = 150-200
and
you got yourself a way faster car

This is an awesome way to lose power. If the aux port actuators are removed, the car will be slower. If the S5 VDI actuator is removed, the car will be MUCH slower.

This will be a power loss. You will suck in hot engine bay air and the panty hose are a terrible filter.
