New stick shift driver problem or clutch?
hi, im new here and my risking my reputation asking this question but i realli need help, i just redently bought a 1991 rx7 coupe and its my first manual car. im having a hard time feeling the "POINT" in the clutch where u supose to gas... when i was learning on my freinds mr2, it felt a lot easier to drive, i could almost feel the car engaging with the clutch, but this one is just different in a way...i cant fell the "POINT" engaging, all i feel is the car vibrating so that when i kno when to gas ( when reversing uphill) do u guys think its just me not knowing how to drive my car and not use to my clutch yet, or do u guys think there is sumthin wrong with my clutch??? please tell me wat ever u guys have in mind... i realli need to kno...i died out like 5 times today cuz i got scared and hesitated and let go of the clutch too fast when gassing...i realli need help...dnx guys
just give it some time and feel it out... after enough experience you should be able to tell on your own whether its the clutch or not. im sure its just you learnin, but my advice is to let someone with some expervience drive it around a lil and see what they think- good luck
When i first got my 7 it was a little diffcult for me to find the "point" too. But i tighten down the gas pedal cable and it helped alot. ALso it could be your trans mount too. But don't blame any thing untill you have someone else drive it. Maybe you can tell your friend with the mr2 to drive it. GOod luck and congras on your new car!
ill tell you this because i have had both cars....my mr2 seemed to have a stiffer clutch where as the seven also being a rotary engine having a bit of a different powerband and my car and any other seven at least having a clutch that was very smooth can be harder, but very nominaly different BUT if you are a complete noob, it could make a difference...just get used to her and youll be alright
Yeah, it takes a little while to be able to drive stick smoothly in any car you encounter, if you're in doubt, floor it while in low RPMs in 5th Gear, if the RPMs rise and the speed dosen't, you have a bad clutch.
i think everyone goes through this while learning to drive stick... at least most people. one tip i can give you is when you think its about ready to die, instead of stalling out just push the clutch in as fast as you can and let go of the gas. that usually saved me stalling out and gave me another chance at it without having to start my car again.
Possibilities:
1) Previous owner install a metallic high performance clutch.
2) Loose or broken front differential mount.
3) Burn spots on flywheel or pressure plate.
#1 & #3 you can adjust to & fix later.
If it's #2 you need fix it soon
Also check the clutch fluid color. It should be about the color of beer.
If has a gray tint, the clutch master is wearing out.

I wouldn't feel bad, you got to remember, this car is different then any other car on the road really, so of course it takes some getting used to. I agree with what everyone else said, just take your time, feel it out, take it slow, and get a feel for it. Once you do, and then you feel the need for a short shifter, then you get to do it all over again!
Also, I think that EVERYBODY here had to learn how to drive a stick again when they bought their 7.

i agree with impreza2rx7.... i had driven tons of sticks (old school domestic, jap, euro, ect.) but the first day i worked at a sub dealer i got to drive a WRX and i stalled once and came close a few other times.... they are wierd.
thanks everyone!!! i guess im just going to practice a lot more... ill take everyones advice and hope ill get better...ill also have a freind help me check if tehre are any problems w/ the clutch or the car in general...tahnks everyone!!! u guys helped a lot!!!
Every car is different in driving. It takes time to get used to it. I can drive any car off da bat tho. reviving the engine til 1200-1700 before u start letting go 2 much clutch. Its all about havin a lead foot. Learn not to have one.
You're driving a car with a lot less torque at lower revs than an MR2. Like the others said, give it some time and you'll be fine. Have someone else drive it while you're in the passenger seat and see if you still feel the vibration at low speeds. If so, your front u-joint may be bad. If not, it's just a matter of learning to drive a stick. Learning how to back a car uphill in reverse with a stick can be a challenge
