new to RX-7's and rotaries... need help :)

i am picking up my first mazda other than a really old 323. its a 1987 RX-7 trubo II with a garret 57trim turbo and some other supporting mods.

first off i have no clue about rotary motors and am at home with subaru's. my current car and project is a 00 impreza 2.5RS with a bit done to it. the subaru is going under the knife here soon for new motor and internals/full swap.

the RX-7 i am picking up's motor is gone. low compression and from the basics i have heard this is common. i am wondering what everyones suggestions on getting a new running motor in the car would be. im not looking to make this a street monster as my subaru is my "quick" car.

i just want to get this running and make it look nice. so all and any suggestions are good.

im a quick learner and would like ALL the info and suggestions you have in regards to these cars and upgrades.

here is the list of planned upgrades.

some body work. clean body kit (OEM aero preferably or something that looks good)
suspension in my book is a big thing.
wheels and tires. (im a wheel kinda guy)

and it stops there with maybe some nice interior.
kind of like this:

so any and all info would be great!!!

(sorry if that came out a little jumbled...)

here is my current car.

Nice suby, love the color. Its normally cheaper to rebuild if the housings, rotors etc are good. Its also a good experience for most rotary enthusiasts.

That could toast the rear housing. Send the motor to BDC in Texas. He's the bomb and his works are top notch rebuilds.

Their a few company you can send the motor to to have rebuilt. You can also diy. Just need to make sure housings and rotors are usable. If not you can buy new ones to replaced damaged ones.

How much would a good rebuild cost? How much power do you think the car would put down with the 57 trim and some basic sapporting mods with a mild tune? How reliable?

Sorry for the newb questions. Ill answer subaru ones if you want haha!

Depends on how the condition of the motor is, only one way to find out. Tear it apart.

Somewhere in the 300's to the wheels with a good standalone and setup fuel system. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you a quote on an engine job. You can visit my website here: http://www.bdcmotorsports.com

thanks.

i was reading through the tread. does the OP make reeplica's of the front half bumper and side skirts/rear half bumper?what does it run for that?

that car is clean. maybe not my choice in wheels. but i like the front bumper and side skirts. the rear bumper does not flow with the rest of the car. but it almost reminds me of like the instant gentleman body kits for the S13's.

how do you think some Advan RCII or RGII's would go with the car... or even some bbs RG-f or volk GT-U's?

i had some advan RCII on the subie for a bit... 255 tires all the way around

yes, the S4 and S5 is for model years.

You have 86 - 91 years that are the FC model aka 2nd gen RX7.

Within those years mazda changed a lot of little things like engine, tails and cosmetics things but left the actual car body and most of the basic parts unchanged, most parts can be interchaged between the S4 and S5 except some engine parts.

S4 is 86 - 88
S5 is 89 - 91

The S5 is a better car in that it has more power stock and a few parts that are better but really they are both about the same as far as building them up.

The S4 has a little lower compression which can allow for high boost but the S5 have a better intake and little things like that.

The one hypertek posted has a full front bumper, side skirts, and rear add ons from Shineauto projects. He is a vendor on this forum so look under the vendor section and pm him. He also makes basic lips that attach to the stock bumper.

you got a s4 model, Have you seen S13 zenki lips put on the s4? it looks pretty decent for a fairly cheap lip... a few on here have done it.

the car is under contstruction...

it will have an 03 WRX motor built with VF39 turbo. etc etc as far as supporting mods. will be running about 320hp in a 2700lb car with 4.11 gearing which will be pretty quick and fun should run mid 12s at the drag and put down some nice times at the raceway. has front wilwood brake setup, BC racing coilovers. perrin sway bars. current wheels are BBS RG-f that weigh in at about 11lbs a peice. front and rear strut tower braces. the car will be replaced by the RX7 as the daily driver due to getting a good price on it. am picking the car up with everything for only 600$ and when the motor is replaced/rebuilt the subaru will be built further.

i race it locally at Sandia Motor Speedway here in new mexico and i may do a little drifting in the RX7 since i miss my S13.

so the zenki front lip from the silvia can be put on the s4? got any pictures of that?

nice! you drive a FXT. great car i love quick little wagons.

i had some more quesitons for you RX7 guru's

will an s5 tranny and motor go right into an S4 car? i have heard about possibly doing wiring? (did a search and nothing seemed to pull up)

also i know abou the horror stories of JDM motors but will those directly bolt into an S4? keep in mind this is all staying turbo II, so turbo II s4 and turbo II s5.

Your question pertaining to J-spec motors. Well, I performed a swap...going NA to TII and picked up a J-spec motor. People will tell you it's abit of gamble in that they possibly blow up lol or need a rebuild as soon as you receive it. Id say with the car you have being a S4 TII...check compression!!!

I say this because overall, you might just be able to keep the set up you already have and not have to worry about interchanging wiring and parts between both S4 and S5.

Besides, with your possibility of doing a rebuild anyway...Id say just get that done and you should be cool...
