NEw to the Rotary World and need Help!

Hey everybody. I have had an 1986 RX-7 GXL for about 3 months now. It is my baby and my love. I just got over its first big problem with it flooding itself and having to pull some fuses and pull out the plugs (which are expensive!) Its a non turbo, and it is pretty fast. I'm used to driving front wheel cars that pack some horses. Now with the rotary, i have no idea what to do. I'm young and don't have much money. I just got done restoring what little needed to be done to my rx-7. Its comletely orignal interior and exterior wise. I want additional horsepower and low end torque. What do I buy to get this without emptying my bank? PLease any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have heard that a header will really free up some ponies in the rotary, but I am new to this game myself.

As for your engine trouble, you may want to verify that your fuel injectors are not leaking and possibly get a compression check. Also, starting and then stopping the engine before it is warmed up can sometimes cause flooding.

As for torque and power, check out the links in my signature. Make sure that your car is as healthy as possible before making major changes. Also check out the other cars on the forum for examples of what you can do. Good luck, and I hope not too many people flame you for asking the same question seen here many times before.

FYI Cheap NGK Plugs

Advance Autoparts has the factory NGK's for $4.99 ea with a 2yr warranty. If you dont have local stores they have an online store.

As far a performance mods... Your first steps should be good upkeep/maintenince. This can be done by looking into Mazda's reccommended maintenance schedule and just checking out things like sticky calipers, bad plugs, alignment etc...

Next is allowing the engine to breathe easier. A cone filter that is sheilded from the heat of the radiator, aftermarket exhaust are good starts. Look into the exhaust systems available before modifying your own, the 5th and 6th ports on your engine require a certain amount of exhaust backpressure to open.
