Question New Rebuild Startup Procedure

Does anybody remember seeing a list of things to do before starting a new rebuild for the first time. Like "crank motor until oil pressure shows on gauge" and "squirt oil into combustion chamber". I saw a list someplace a few weeks ago.

thanks..............ashley

I use no special process, when I rebuild I lube everything almost to excess becasue I am unsure how long the motor will sit. When I drop one in, I fill the fluids as torean noted and turn the key - thats it, anything else is overrated.

nothing really. You should have assembly lube and vaseline all over everything inside. This should keep everything lubed up for the few seconds until the oil pump cankick in and get oil pressure. When you start it up make sure that you have oil pressure right away. The needle should hesitate just a bit but within 15 seconds there should be pressure.

Make sure your battery has been on the charger all night before trying to start as well. a slow crank will make things difficult.

Make sure the exhaust can escape cause it will smoke like crazy for about 5 minutes then it will drop to only insane levels for another 5 minutes. Then all the oil from where your hands touched it will begin to burn off and now smoke will rise from the engine bay. So It may be a good idea to have a fan in the garage as you start it.

I didn't hear anything about squirting oil in the engine bay except from those engines that didn't start right away. Your assembly lube is in there along with Marvels Mystery oil and vaseline......that alot of extra oil.

dDub as well as myself had our engine crank on the third short burst of the starter. (inother words a 5 second crank each time and vala) The only thing that I did was turn up my idle screw just a hair.

The list you may be thinking of is Kevin Landers very helpful website.
