New radiator/overheat

Hey all,
I have a 1986 mazda rx-7 (non turbo) and have been having the classic over heat problems.

New water pump, thermostat, good hoses, fan clutch is still pushing, yes i still have the factory baffling on the underside and top, time for a radiator?

I live in the desert at 5500feet above sea level, so this isn't helping things, but the car will not stay cool. It runs hot often, Sometimes at low speeds sometimes at high speed. , sometimes it blows coolant (twice now).

SILLA7516 Silla Radiator is my first option, anyone try this radiator? It's the least expensive option, and i am broke. Feedback is well appreciated.

BEEEP we have a winner.

That is your problem
#1 the stock temp thermostat is 180F
#2 there is not one aftermarket thermostat that I have seen that works in a rotary engine the correct way. Sure there are aftermarket thermostats that fit, but not that work correctly in a rotary motor.

ONLY use the Mazda OEM thermostat. It is the only one that flows correctly at all temps.

You will continue to have hot/overheating problems until it is replaced with a Mazda OEM thermostat.

and you are right, using a lower temp thermostat will not help, but using the correct temp one will

Bless you sir. If this ends my woes, you have won a complimentary fruit basket. I love this car, and don't want to be rid of it until i absolutely have to. : )

it seems odd that this could account for such a massive hot running problem, but i am leaving the house right now to get one. Thank you.

Mark:
Interesting development. On March 23, my thermostat O ring was leaking when cold, 3rd time since we purchased it new in '89 (TII), so I called the local dealers to get thermostat and gasket. No luck, no one had them in stock. Thought I'd order one from Mazdatrix, but in the meantime I reversed the O ring which solved the problem. The stat arrived a couple of months ago, so with this thread I thought I'd open the box. It contained a thermostat made in the USA by Stant with no jiggle hole, no bypass. Mazdatrix took green tape and covered the thermostat box with a sticker SMALL PARTS ENCLOSED so I couldn't read the mfg. I peeled it back and in LARGE letters STANT 180 degree thermostat. The invoice reads 15-1710-8AF6.

So much for original Mazda parts from Mazdatrix. As I'm not too happy, I'll be calling them today!!!!!!!!!

From their Website:
All rotary's must have a thermostat for street application.
The rotary thermostat must be for a By-Pass System.(has spring-loaded disc on bottom)
The use of the wrong thermostat will cause 20% to 30% loss in cooling capacity.

Well they just shipped one to me that didn't have the by-pass!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me rephrase the previous statement. It had the By Pass disc at the bottom, but not the "jiggle" hole, or any hole on the face of the stat.

Ya get that Mazda OEM Themostat on there ASAP... Sometimes those aftermarket Thermostat's don't have that jiggle pin that is ever so important. By the way anybody know what that "jiggle pin" actually does, I'm guessing it lets air out to the top portion of the cooling system right?

It is supposed to help get rid of bubbles in the system I think. That sucks Mazda Trix is going with Stant now. Get a Mazda OEM unit on there A.S.A.P.

word from maqzdatrix in reply to my question "is this thermo a mazda oem?"

"Yes, it is a genuine Mazda thermostat.
The only one we sell Stant is the 89-95 thermostat because the Mazda one is junk."

The word so far.

Ok, so i took some advice and got a temporary 180F thermo. When i took the old one off, i noticed it was stuck open, and that it was a 192. I replaced a few hoses just for fun, and slapped it all together. Around town so far, no high heat. It has been far cooler here than is customary, but engine temps are cooler than average. I am going to go take it out on the desert highway to see if i can get the temps up, or if i am home free. I'll keep ya posted.
