Red face New owner of a 1987 rx-7

Hey guys I just got my first rx-7 second gen.

So this car has no engine in it. I have some questions about the rotary engine. Ok so i would like to put in a 13B turbo Or a 20B turbo. I have never put a engine in a car or tryed to build a engine from parts. How hard is it am i getting in to deep. I am 16, If i went and bought say this http://orlando.craigslist.org/pts/874941756.html . How hard would it to build a engine is it cheaper then buying one that is built all ready, What parts do you need to make a engine run. How hard is it to put a engine in a car, Is it just plug and play. Thank you for your time and help.

congrats on the 7. you are asking questions that have been asked and answered 100 times. You should read the FAQ then search before asking questions.

When you have a specific question, and you search and find no answer, then post a new thread.

Good luck and welcome aboard.

PS. Stay away from that motor or any other you find for sale online. That is a Non turbo motor anyway. You need to find a rotary guy locally and have them inspect what ever you want to buy. Or you can post pics of everything and try to get help here.

The turbo swap is fairly easy. It's all bolt in and covered in the FAQ in great detail. It helps if you have access to a full TII parts car but you can buy the parts separately if you want.

A 20B swap is a totally different story. Plenty of custom fabrication, and a significant expense. Don't think about it unless you have previous experience about about $20,000 to burn.

Hey thank you for the feed back. I was on the FAQ and was looking around a decided to go with a all ready built engine. But the car i have now is a N/A, So i have the wrong wiring harness. So I went to look at the car and man i have so many wires I don't know what to pull out. The FAQ sayed nothing about pulling a wiring harness. How do i know what to pull out and where is my ecu located on a 87 rx-7. Thank you for your time and support.

Rajien2 congrats on the buy, sounds like you got a big project ahead of you.

-If you need visuals in aiding you with your car refer to the FSM which can be downloaded. http://rx7city.com/88manual2.htm

Familiarize yourself with the manual, it will be your guide so if you have questions that are not covered in the faqs it will help you formulate your questions.

-Dont forget to use the Search Function in this site

-Since your 16, and have no previous experience in this area, i am going to recommend staying within the bounds of an N/A for now. Take your time to learn the car properly.

Get an NA to screw with for now. They're easy to find. The problem with your buying an FC without a motor is now you don't have one already in the car to learn about. Now you have to find out where everything goes yourself, and on top of that you won't know if you are missing something. You're about to go down a tough road, bud.

first things first! clean that bitch up, and inspect her for any more rust than that which you only see initially. Before rust becomes any more of a problem you want to attack those areas first. Make some friends who are body specialists, they will help you get what you need done.

N/A is perfectly fine for drifting, in fact i kind of prefer N/A for Autocross which may also be of interest to you later on. For drifting you want to have a good balance on the suspension, brakes, and body. Which there are abundance of parts for the FC for that sort of motorsports.

If you plan on going turbo down the road its possible to upgrade the N/A for a turbo application, but i wouldn't recommend it.

FC is the 2nd generation RX-7.

FB is first, FD is third.

Pineapple Racing is a good place to lookat for an engine, also maybe try Corksport? Not sure...

They are over in OR/WA but that's reasonably close to you. How much did you pay for your baby? I got one that's a white S4 as well.

Good luck with her.

might as well buy a brand new lock set with ignition, try mazdatrix.com or Blackdragonauto.com

Your ECU is located under the carpet on the passenger side just below the dash. Just pull the carpet up and you will see the metal box on the right side floor.

Theres a good chance someone took your ECU with the engine too. Just look under that plate on the passenger side for a little metal box. Also for drifting, your going to want to save up and replace a lot of your suspension. For a young first timer like you, I would recommend strut/spring upgrade or even some low end coilovers (megan/stance). With a strong motor and some stiffer suspension, you will have a lot of fun! Also remember, FC's are one of the more difficult cars to drift so just stick with it and keep it fun.

hehe ecu is there it is the only thing on the car that looks brand new :P. Why is this car hard to drift? Thank you for the feed back. O by the way is there a way i can like bypass the key and just use a switch, It is not like I am going to leave the car in downtown boise. thank you.

Solenoid. Anyway, get your VIN # and take it to your local Mazda dealership. Bring proof of ownership of the car. They will cut you new keys for a small fee. It's gonna be the ugly plain key though. You can buy blanks if you want something nicer.

Like these babies

I also saw a group buy somewhere for the Spirit-R keys.

Looking at the car, I'd think a fancy key would be pretty far down the list of things to obtain.
