First off I have an 86' GXL No turbo.

1.) I want to install CD player and I have connected everything right. But
it will not play through factory speakers. If i hook up a speaker straight
it will play fine. Does this have anything to do with the built in Amps?
I would rather not have to buy the wiring adaptors from Best Buy if I dont have to.

2.) The transmission is leaking a little from the end where the driveshaft
slips in. There is a rubber piece that is torn is this replaceable without
taking tranny out?

3.) What is an average/good price for a muffler, new? The couple places
I called wanted around $189.00 apiece.

4.) I have alot of play in the stickshift. Is there anything I can do to fix
this?

These are my main questions for now hope some people can help me out on some or all of these. Thanks in advance...

 

The aftermarket radio may interfere with the stock speakers...Reason? First off, I dont have a schematic diagram in front of me, but from what I know about powered speakers, most aftermarket stereos have built in amplifiers, this sends a WAY to big signal to the pre-existing amps on the speakers, causing the amps to overdrive and go into distortion. Also could be that the stock stereo sends a signal to the amps on the speakers that truns them on..Your aftermarket stereo may not be turning on the amps...Either case, you need to bypass the amps. As far as the driveshaft is concerned, if its leaking at the tail end of the tranny, you have to pull the driveshaft. Your seal is shot. Its not as hard as you think it is.

what kind of exhaust are you wanting to get, and is it a cat back system or just the muffler?

 

The 189 figure for the mufflers is not too far off. The reason they are so high is the stainless steel tip and the hangers that are welded on the muffler. I gave about 140 each for my mufflers three years ago. They came from Car Quest. At the time I didn't have the bucks for a decent exhaust system. Now I can't make myself spend the money and take off those perfectly good 140 dollar mufflers. I did junk the cats and install a Bonez down pipe. That made a big difference.

 

why spen 189 on mufflers when you can get dynomax's for 80?

1. If I take off the cats will it pass inspection? I have to
get new tags and it came from Texas.
2. Does taking off the cats improve performance, sound?
A noticible differance?
3. I have the stock single pipe that splits into mufflers
which system is better dual pipes all the way back or
the split like it is stock?

Is the Shift Lever Bushing set what you are talking about?
6 circle pieces that are below the shift lever.
How do I replace them, is it easy? Can I do it from inside
the car after taking the shift lever out?

Passing emissions depends on the laws in your particular state...If you have to get a "sniffer check" chances are you wont pass without your cats. Plus once you remove them, your 5 and 6 ports will cease to function (If they were working at all), then you have to rig them some other way in order to work. My advice to you would be to get an aftermarket cat...like a "Hi Flow" cat...There are several places that make them...Ramdom Technologies, Catco (which is what I am running), and others... This almost sounds like you are doing all this for a vehicle inspection...Do NOT take out your cats until after your inspection. It will fail. You can however pass with just the main cat(big one) The front ones seek to get plugged and just bashing them out with a big screwdriver will give you a good gain in power. Best thing to do is keep it stock for now. After inspection get a header and a straight through exhaust. I keep my stock exhaust standing on end in my carport for when aircare time comes around.

Run the wires from your stereo directly to your speakers. The stock ones are amplified and won't work with your new deck.

 

Get the "shifter bushing set" from your local dealer, mine sells them for $7. You can change it from the inside of your car, my friend has done it and told me it takes like 5 minutes or less. Pull the shifter completely out and it should be pretty straight forward.

Throw all the pieces of the stock stereo system away.&nbsp It's really nasty compared to your aftermarket options are.&nbsp If you don't have the money, save more!

Remove the driveshaft and remove and replace the oil seal at the end.&nbsp The transmission doesn't have to be pulled.

They sell a whole shifter bushing set. You can do this from the inside of the car, takes 10 minutes or so. good luck!

 

Thank you all for taking the time to answer my questions you have been a big help- I have taken your advice and since replaced shift lever bushings much nicer now! I put on a stock muffler I got from junkyard to pass inspection with...20bucks. and rewired the system with speaker wire to bypass the amplified ones.
I put in the new oil seal at the end and fixed that little annoyance. I have a few new questions that I will post
since everyone was so helpful and knowledgable.
